Are you also having 0 rpm issue? If you haven't tried it, I say run with custom curve first and see if it happens. As far as the settings staying after uninstalling link, iirc the profile writes onto the cooler which includes custom fan curve and pump LED color so it should stay even after removing C Link. BUT let me confirm that and see that is accurate.
update: so i uninstalled all the link stuff and re-installed it i installed the latest chipset drivers i swapped the USB header and i tried a standard mini USB cable and plugged it into one of the rear IO USB ports
Corsair Link is a system monitoring app specifically built for corsair products. If you want to control PC fan speed, monitor CPU and GPU temperature, or need a hydro cooling solution then corsair link 4 is worth giving a try.
Nowadays, many users are using corsair utilities on their PCs. There is a whole series of liquid CPU coolers, the most popular are hydro series H115i, H110i, H100i v2, H80i v2. Apart from these all-in-one coolers corsair also manufacture power supplies, graphics cards, performance DRAM. To control all their products with one software corsair link 4 is developed.
You can easily understand your system operations with an unmatched level of detail. Monitor coolant temperature and CPU ambient temperature at multiple points. If you need to change case fan speed you can easily do so. The corsair utility is compatible with the aftermarket case fan and CPU fan.
The corsair monitoring utility also allows you to choose graphing. Simply click on the graphing tab and see real-time fluctuation in temperature. Here you can see the maximum and minimum CPU temperature of different cores. You can also monitor PC fan speed in RPM. You can also choose any of the temperature inputs or fans to be graphed.
If you want to use monitoring software that is restricted to a particular brand then you can download SpeedFan or MSI Afterburner. These are the best alternatives to the corsair monitoring tool. These apps work great irrespective of what hardware brand you have on your PC.

Try to disconnect PSU USB 'corsair link' cable as googling corsair link sleep has people talking about that being problematic. In the comments you electronically disabled all your devices, please physically disconnect everything possible except for keyboard, might want to even try another one of those. This is a normal troubleshooting step that Microsoft recommends & Level 2 techs at HP (I was a lvl1 tech there) suggested, process of elimination. No one is saying disconnecting everything will BE the fix, it will help us understand IF ANY of the devices are problematic. If not then we know its not those pieces of equipment.
This is where Corsair's new iCUE LINK Smart Component Ecosystem fits in, which is all about simplifying the DIY PC building process through a reversible single-cable with a built-in micro-controller that can link, chain, and connect to a System Hub. According to Corsair, it will help to eliminate "nests of wires, connection hubs, PWM and RGB splitters cluttering up your case."
Ventilating indoor spaces helps prevent COVID-19 transmission. We investigated self-reported rates of opening windows to improve ventilation in the home, perceived effectiveness of opening windows, and confidence that if you wanted to, you could open windows. One in 6 people reported rarely, if ever, opening windows in their home in the last week. Three in 4 people knew that opening windows to improve ventilation was an effective way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and 5 in 6 were confident that they could open windows in their home. Official messaging should continue to seek to improve knowledge about the effectiveness of ventilation for reducing COVID-19 transmission, and increase the frequency of window opening.

I'm not a particular fan of RGB lighting and fans but I have to admit that that Corsair link does seem super handy!
I am however crazy about cable management and it seems this is amazing for that
Are you taking about the fan hub? You do not need expensive or fancy equipment to tidy up the cables and have a less intrusive fan hub in your case, but if you want to use corsair's proprietary link technology I guess you do have to use their products, I try to avoid vendor lock-in practices as a rule personally,
That's fair, in my new PC there are 3 different RGB controllers that all require different proprietary software to work. Corsair's software can control two of the three (the corsair products being a given), ASUS via a plugin but not the Lian-Li Strimer cable controller which can only sync. to the ASUS motherboard. Corsair can't pick that up properly as a separate header via the plugin so I have both the iCue and Lian-Li software running on the system at the same time which isn't ideal. As and when I get round to clean installing the OS because I want to switch the storage to striped RAID I will also see how many headers are available still on the corsair controller and if I can bypass the Lian-li controller for the two cables concerned. It weighs an absolute ton so moving it to access the rear isn't going to be done regularly.
The software is a different kind of issue though having to run a different brand's software just to control their components isn't good either. Microsoft recently released their native rgb control software for windows 11 called Dynamic Lightning, I don't know if it will work for you but you could give it a try, maybe it can help you replace running two different software:
