Cinfilm or cine film is the term commonly used in the UK and historically in the US to refer to the 8 mm, Super 8, 9.5 mm, and 16 mm motion picture film formats used for home movies. It is not normally used to refer to professional formats such as 35 mm or 70 mm film, and is incorrect if applied to any video format. In the US, "movie film" is the common informal term for all formats and "motion picture film" the formal one.

Although there had been earlier attempts, typically employing larger formats, the introduction of the 9.5 mm and 16 mm formats in the early 1920s finally succeeded in introducing the practice of showing rented "play-at-home" copies of professionally made films, which, in the case of feature-length films, were usually much shortened from the originals.

More significantly, these new cine film gauges were the first truly practical formats for making casual amateur "home movies" of vacation trips, family gatherings, and important events such as weddings. Amateur dramas and comedies were sometimes filmed, usually just for fun and without any aspiration to artistic merit. On occasion, professional filmmakers employed cine film for cost-saving reasons, or to evoke a particular aesthetic effect.[1]

Amateur 16 mm film-making was an expensive hobby limited to the affluent. The 9.5 mm format made more efficient use of film and was not quite so costly. The 8 mm format, introduced in 1932, consumed only one-quarter as much film as 16 mm and finally made home movies a reasonably affordable luxury for the many. Eventually, the 16 mm format came to be used mostly for commercial, educational and industrial purposes as a cost-cutting, compact alternative to 35 mm film that produced an acceptably sharp and bright image on smaller screens.

Cine film, being commonly available, was also used to record scientific data, such as observations of animal behaviour[2][3] and human gait.[4] In some cases, such as studies of fluid dynamics, recording was done onto cine film at higher speeds than those used in home movies.[5]

In the mid-1970s, Betamax and VHS home videocassette recorders were introduced. Color video cameras, previously beyond the financial reach of all but the richest amateurs,[citation needed] gradually became cheaper and smaller. Battery-powered camcorders combined the recorder and the camera into one portable and increasingly compact and affordable unit. By the early 1980s an hour of blank videotape cost no more than a three-minute 50-foot roll of 8 mm film, in substantial part because of costs associated with the latter's chemical processing. The writing was on the wall for cine film as a mass market item, though even in the early 2010s all the film formats mentioned above were still supported with new film stock and processing, albeit only from a very few specialist suppliers.

Since cine film is now an obsolete format, some companies offer a service whereby these films are converted to modern formats such as DVD, and hobbyists have devised ways of performing the transfer with do-it-yourself equipment.[6]

SILBERSALZ35 is designed to be processed in True Cinefilm ECN-2 chemistry only. Our tests results show dramatically decreased image quality when processed in C-41 chemistry. Also, please be aware that True Cinefilm can damage regular C-41 processing machines.

You can choose special development processes when sending in your film. Please keep in mind that every special development option (like Bleach Bypass or Push / Pull) always counts for a whole voucher (single or 4 film Voucher).

Your film is scanned with our stunning APOLLON.14K scanner. Your scans will be shared within two weeks after we receive your films. Download your photos or view them in your personal web gallery. You can choose between HIGH QUALITY (4K JPG) or FULL QUALITY (14K JPG + 14K JP2) scans.

You can order a return of your negatives right after we received your films for processing, or again after scanning. We will send you a reminder via e-mail. Your negatives will be stored with us for two months. If you choose not to order a negative return, your negatives will be safely destroyed after two months.

With its ultra low granularity and outstanding sharpness, KODAK VISION3* 50D is the worlds sharpest and most fine grained colour negative film. The same advanced dye layering technology makes all VISION3* films the best choice for your most demanding images.

The secret behind the True Cinefilm look can be found in the processing chemistry. After intense testing we decided to use original Kodak ECN-2 KIT chemistry only. Your colours, especially skin colours will benefit immensely.

Cine film refers to analogue motion picture film that is used to capture moving images for television and movies. Cine film comes in different formats, with 8 mm and 16 mm being popular for home movies while 35 mm and 70 mm are widely used by professional filmmakers. Cine film can also be used for still images and can be shot using regular analogue cameras.

Kodak Vision3 and the now-defunct Fuji Eterna were some of the most popular cine films being used for photography. Nowadays brands such as Cinestill, Reflx Lab and Candido sell cine film that has had the remjet layer removed to allow the film to be developed using the C-41 process.

As I mentioned the other day, I have a plan to deal with the ever-increasing cost of shooting colour film in my 35mm cameras. That blog post was all about setting up a home scanning workflow to eliminate the cost of lab scans. Today I'd like to share a few images from my first two rolls of Kodak Vision3 250D.

The rationale behind this film choice is simple: you can get it for 6.50 a roll, which is a lot cheaper than the 18 or so you'll pay for Kodak Portra. I was also interested to see the image quality myself, which has an excellent reputation (many mainstream movies are shot using this stock).

However, there are complications. Most colour film you can buy today uses the standard C41 process, which any lab can process for you. Simple. The thing about Kodak Vision3 (which is available in several different variants of speed and white balance) is that it is not a photographic film; it's cine film. This fact has several practical implications.

First, Vision3 is supplied from Kodak in big rolls designed for cine cameras. If you want to feed this stuff through a 35mm camera designed for stills then you either have to a) load your own canisters (which requires a loading machine), or b) buy pre-loaded canisters from someone else who has already done this. Several shops are now selling pre-loaded Vision3 cans for photographers. I bought mine from Analogue Revival and currently have a decent stash in the freezer.

Second, cine film has what is known as a remjet layer: a dark-coloured protective coating designed to reduce light piping, scratches, static, and halation. This layer must be removed before the film can be processed. Although you can process cine film in C41 chemistry, the colours will be different and you still need to deal with the remjet.

All this having been understood and taken into account, the actual procedure is pretty simple. I rated my cine film at ISO 125 (over-exposing by a stop from the box speed of 250), shot my two rolls, and sent them off to the lab. A few days later, the negatives returned, and I fed them through my Plustek and watched the colours appear on my monitor.

The results are most pleasing. It's a bright and colourful film stock in sunny conditions, and really makes the August colours on Lochnagar pop. However, it can also be surprisingly subtle in more subdued light. In some images it is almost grainless, while in others a little grain is visible (about what I'd expect from Portra 160). It should enlarge well up to any size I'm likely to need for editorial purposes.

I would not say that it has a particularly vintage look, which you'll often see from stocks such as Washi X or even Fujifilm C200. In fact, some of these images look so sharp and clean that they could be digital. These are, of course, low-res exports from the original scans. Camera setup: Leica M3, using either a Summicron 5cm f/2 or Summaron 3.5cm f/3.5 lens.

Most presets are a one-size-fits-all solution, which usually leaves your images looking over-corrected (or not enough). Our presets are designed with maximum flexibility, so you can choose between fine, normal, and plus settings to fine-tune your image.

We spent countless hours studying the fine details of film color and conducted many tests to develop an accurate and precise film look for you. Our job is to make software that works so you can be free to do your job: creating great art.
