Hello!

I am working on an outdoor classroom project in a middle school.  We would like to know what other schools use for shade outside- preferably options that do not require approval by the State Architect and are safe enough to get the green light from administrators.
I have seen the 4x4 posts with shade sails used, but those are considered "unsafe" by our district's admin team. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Hello Anna,

Have you checked out Green Schoolyard America's resources on creating outdoor classroom spaces? They have a lot of ideas, and have a specific page just on shade structures: https://www.greenschoolyards.org/shelter
Consider Adding Shelter if Needed. There is a wide range of shade and shelter options to choose from and the “best” options are the ones that fit well with your school and district’s outdoor learning goals, available funds, physical site constraints, and permitting requirements.

All the best,

I am hoping to get a cover for my outdoor classroom this fall. Waiting on the grant funds. See details to what we are getting and the space.

Will send photos as soon as we have it installed.

I was going to recommend the same resource. Thank you Emma! We built a shade structure using a high tunnel frame - it is structurally sound and wind-resistant. Let the group know what you decide to use!
