Hello friends,
I am trying to freshen up my lessons this year - does anyone have a favorite elementary level Food System/Where our Food Comes From lesson you like to use? I created one based on "How Did that Get Into My Lunch" but am looking to change things up a bit.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Rebekka!

Specifically on how food gets from field to plate, I love their grains lessons (one for Pre-K, one for 4th grade). Here is another one kind of tangentially related (and really fun when I've taught it!) about how agricultural and cooking technology has changed over the years.

In general, FoodPrints has their entire curriculum to browse online for free including instructional videos both for educators and students. Definitely check out their related readings in each lesson and suggested recipes if you're cooking!

Happy to talk through how I've taught them before if that feels helpful :)

Daniel

Hi Rebekka,

Have you looked at the National Ag in the Classroom Curriculum Matrix (https://agclassroom.org/matrix/) for some lessons and resources? This book and the additional lesson resources could be a possible option - https://agclassroom.org/matrix/companion-resources/346/. I always find wonderful lessons and other materials here.

Have you looked at the Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom (https://www.agintheclassroom.org/) website? If you want to some information to show where the ingredients for pizza come from you can check out the resources provided on their website page about Ag Mags and Readers (https://www.agintheclassroom.org/teacher-resources/ag-mags-and-readers/). For an example take a look at the "Pizza" topic! They have a great Junior Ag Mag for 2nd through 4th, and a wonderful Facts for Little Readers K - 1st. Poke around on their website and you will find lots of inspiring resources.

I'm a special librarian that focuses on gardening, ag and environmental resources for children and youth. Let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great day,
Pam
