For SGSOs:

What metrics do you use for reviewing and evaluating your success? And how do you identify and describe quality indicators?

I have a better handle on lessons, where you can document topics, length, frequency and # of students reached.

But, for example, let's say you support X number of school gardens. What qualifies as a school garden? (One or more garden beds, a container garden?) What are the minimum requirements? Is a patch of mint in an otherwise barren garden a "garden?"

Thank you,

Hi Sherman,

Great questions. First I would define what success is for your program- then start looking at ways to measure this success.

I recommend this collection of evaluation resources shared by SGSOs here: Measuring Impact and sharing Results Promising Practice. The survey outcomes framework may be particularly useful.

What qualifies as a school garden? We’ve moved away from defining a school garden based on the physical space, and towards the programing (student engagement). We landed on this:

A school garden is considered “active” when at least one teacher incorporates at least five garden-based lessons into their teaching practice and when at least one student is exposed to at least 10 hours of garden-based education per school year.

We’ve attempted to define other commonly used terms such as school garden program, and school garden educator in our school garden guide (pg 18) here
