Hi folks,

Has anyone found some short-term solutions for making more accessible paths in the absence of compact gravel or pavement? We have a student at one of our schools who uses a wheelchair and isn't able to move around the garden because it's mostly wood chips. While we are making it a priority to figure out more permanent solutions (or rather, find the funds for more permanent solutions), we don't have the funds readily available to install compact gravel, and I'm wondering if anyone has found a way to make temporary pathways that a wheelchair could traverse?

Hoping we can all continue to prioritize accessibility of all kinds in our garden spaces, and that the more permanent solutions become more financially available!

Thanks,

We use compacted DG (decomposed granite) that has worked really well for our kiddos in wheelchairs. Here is what our paths look like: https://www.facebook.com/ChaparralGarden/photos/4566973550025864

Ary,
While we haven’t installed this yet, one of my schools is looking at this product for their accessible paths.

Love this conversation and shares! We're building new gardens at some schools and looking into ADA material that drains. We've had problems with DG drainage. Did you experience this?

Thanks!

Our school is also looking for something to put on our gravel pathways to make them ADA accessible and control weeds.  Any ideas would be appreciated!

Aloha Ary and School Garden Network friends,

Tenax GP Flex 1800 from Tenax works well for an accessible garden pathway. It comes in large rolls (6.7 ft x 66 ft) that can be cut to size with heavy-duty shears. I first laid out weed mat, then the Tenax GP Flex 1800 roll, and then used ground staples to hold both in place. Here's a picture of what it looks like rolled out around our accessible school-community garden. Also attached to this email s product information including ADA compliance info. I would check first if there is a vendor near you because shipping can be pricey.

Hope that helps! And yes to prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity in all our school garden efforts 🙌
