Hey everyone,

My name is Phyllicia Moore, agriculture and school garden education specialist for Houston ISD.  I am attempting to streamline our school gardens into a manageable system.  I have them in cohorts based on when were able to target/find all of the existing school gardens.  I want to create a multi-tier system of support so I can plan webinars and professional development efficiently for our teachers.  I need help formatting the MTSS.

Has anyone created a district wide MTSS for school gardens? If so, please help me.

Thanks,
Phyllicia

Hi All,

I’m very excited to see this thread about MultiTiered Systems of Support (MTSS) as a framework to support SGSOs. If you are struggling to provide effective support to multiple school gardens in your region, I highly recommend this nationally recognized, research-based approach. I’ve been using it to support school gardens in my region (DC) for the past few years and co-presented on this topic at the 2022 Growing School Gardens Summit and shared a brief overview on an SGSO webinar titled Regional Support Models. I HIGHLY recommend watching this webinar in its entirety - the Wisconsin School Garden Network shared some great information that should not be missed but if you are pressed for time, the piece on MTSS starts at minute 7:45.

I hope this is helpful!

Hi Phyllicia, nice to see your name pop up here!

This is also something we're working on formalizing this year. If it would be helpful, I'd be interested in having a phone or google meet to brainstorm and co-plan at some point in the coming weeks.

For the past few years, I've been using this informal spreadsheet that's shared below to keep track of the schools we support and their different needs throughout the seasons. I bet it's not too different from what you're already using to track your schools.
For the "schools in programming", we lead/co-teach the main classes in the garden (planting, harvesting, winterizing, and occasionally some more in depth fun ones). The "schools needing extra support" are at a varying level of support needs, some are still needing direct teaching support and some are just needing some more behind the scenes lesson planning or garden mapping support. The "transitioned schools" are schools that are teaching in and maintaining the gardens on their own and we provide hands-off support through basic garden supplies mailings/deliveries or seedling vouchers at our greenhouse.

What I'm looking to do is make a document that lays out what the exact supports are for each tier - where tier 1 is for schools in programming/needing all the supports we provide, tier 2 needs some supports, and tier 3 is independent but receives basic supplies/resources from us. Does this sound like what you're working on? I'm going to be watching that webinar that Sam shared, thanks for that Sam!

hope you're all doing well out there, Redding
