Hi All,

We are currently updating our DC school garden planting calendar and want to also expand it to include additional resources to help educators have more success with planting, growing, and caring for their plants. I’m curious what type of guidance folks offer to educators to assist them with knowing when to plant, what to plant, how to plant, and WHY to plant. I’m especially interested in the why- for example do you have resources that make connections between specific activities/ lessons and specific plants.

Maybe you have list like this?

Plant (WHAT)

Example Activities (WHY)

Kale

Kale activity

Tomatoes

Tomato activity

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potato activity

Sorrell

Sorrell activity

Milkweed

Milkweed activity

Thanks!

Here is ours. We also have additional pages to add so that teachers can use these year after year and look back at previous years to see what worked and what didn’t.

Thanks for sharing these.  I'm going to create something similar for our school's gardens.

Hey Sam,

Here is our Alabama School Garden Calendar from Schoolyard Roots. You might also check out our "Garden Toolkit" which is designed to go hand in hand with our curriculum. The Toolkit has tons of info about starting and maintaining school gardens, but for the "whys" of planting you may look at the sections on "Why Grow Organically"; "What to Grow", "Crop Rotation", "Companion Planting", etc. (The one I've linked is actually for "the home gardener" but it is very similar to our resource for school gardens). Hope this is useful!

Hi Sam,
Here's One Cool Earth's planting guide for the central coast of California.  It doesn't list lesson connections, but it has some good design principles.  https://www.onecoolearth.org/uploads/6/3/1/4/63140405/guide_to_a_successful_school_garden__9_.pdf

Here are two planting calendar resources from KidsGardening:

This one is an interactive spring planting calendar to help gardeners (of any age or ability) determine when to plant what:

This one is a lesson plan for students to create a planting calendar for the school: https://kidsgardening.org/resources/lesson-plan-create-a-planting-calendar/
