I know several schools and systems are utilizing student run farmer's markets using produce from the school garden.  We have some schools in the area that would like to do this as well but have concerns about food safety and school liability.  Any advice would be great.

The school system has insurance. Covered under their regular insurance. The school system has bigger things to worry about. Inappropriate student-teacher contact- improving literacy rates, achievement, increasing parent engagement, etc. I find that this is just an excuse not to run a farmers market and fear of the unknown. How can there be fear of organic food. That's like saying I'm scared of using breast milk. Nature is best.

Liability insurance is liability insurance and that's what it's there for. To cover anything that occurs at a school. It's no different from a child falling down on a playground. Are they going to remove swings because they are scared a child is going to fall down from a swing? Arrrrrrrr......

Just my take.....

And that line of reasoning did not come from me, it actually came from a person who works at a state agency who put it in context and it made perfect sense :-),

Wouldn't hurt to have staff involved take a food safety course through local Extension Office.  CO Extension also has handouts on how to wash and store fresh produce.  Imagine all state extension offices do as well.

Also have NEVER heard this coming up as an issue.

I've found the Youth Farm Stands Toolkit from DUG and Slow Foods Denver very helpful -- perhaps the appendices with checklists for set up, harvesting, and clean-up would be helpful for those concerned about food safety and liability?

As long as students are selling whole, uncut produce, the food safety risk is relatively low. A few resources that might be helpful to share with schools: North Carolina Cooperative Extension has a Fresh Produce Safety web page with resources for growers who are selling fresh produce, including a 3-page guide from Ohio about Produce Safety at Farmers Markets. The key things to think about are cleanliness, sanitation, and temperature from the time produce is harvested until the time that it is sold. (The checklists in the Youth Farm Stands Toolkit address all 3 of these.)

I love the toolkit, and have found it very helpful as well. She also has the school and community gardens food safety publication put out by NC Extension. I think she is looking for what others do to help support her point with her administration.

Hi Amy-

We have been conducting student run Farmers Markets in Denver for over 10 years.  Sometimes it is easy to think about these in the same light as bake sales, except with fresh produce.  Treat it as a student run fundraiser, with proceeds to go back to the school garden.  Be sure to have support from the principal.  In the beginning we also got support from the Food Service department.  Their recommendations was just to sell whole, raw, fresh produce with instructions to buyers that they need to wash the produce when they get home.  Do not cut the produce or do any value added products (breads, pesto, salads).  If you stick to raw, whole produce your risk is very minimal.

Slow Food USA has developed a Toolkit to assist in setting up a Youth Farm Stand.  I would be happy to discuss further our experiences with this program.  It is very empowering for a student to sell produce that they grew to the community.

Hi Amy,

We have a Youth Garden Stand program that schools can sign up for just to get them started on correct protocol to sell produce from school garden on campus. The protocol (attached) was developed with guidance from our Health Department. Hope this helps!

Thanks, I love the check list.  I will pass this on.  We have similar information in an extension document, but I like that this is in check list format.

Andrew,

Thank you.  I love the toolkit and have directed many of our schools to it.  It is nice to see what we have been doing is in line with what others are doing.  This will hopefully help the teacher in question show her admin and PTA that others are taking this approach successfully.
