Hi all,

I've been asked to.creat a budget for a proposed brand new school garden, both the building of and the upkeep of said garden. I'm sure you all out there have plenty of resources to share for this kind of project. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Anne in DC

I think we will need additional information to help guide you in the right direction:
  • Size and type of garden (raised beds, in ground, etc.)
  • Type of garden (edible, native, ornamental)
  • Resources already in place at the school
I'm in the process of administering micro-grants to 103 schools in my District so I've worked quite a bit on garden budgets. I just need more information to be helpful.

Thanks Harold. Its going to be a mix of both an I ground perennial garden, and raised bed edible garden beds. The request has been to have the majority of the perennials and larger edibles (fruit trees and shrubs) to be natives. There has also been a request for an medicinal herbal teaching garden that will be separate from both perennial and other vegetables.

There are currently no resources really in place as of right now. It's a brand new campus of a charter school and there are lots of people willing to come there but no full time resources as of right now. Part of what we would like to include in a proposed budget is enough to keep at least a part time person on staff to help coordinate and keep the gardens clean and organized.

There is also the hope that eventually there will be enough funding for a full time coordinator position, and chickens and bees!

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide!

Anne
