Hello All,

The University of Wisconsin Extension right now is working on creating a Harvest of the Month program. They are open to partnering with the Wisconsin School Garden Network to create this content so we are thinking of ways to integrate HOM and school gardens! I am wondering if people have success stories/programs or tips for integrating school gardens and harvest of the month programs.

We are thinking of including a section on harvesting and planting tips with students for each food but would love to hear/see other ideas!

Thank you,
Stef

Hi Stef,

Janelle, here from San Diego Unified. We have created a YouTube channel that takes the students on a “virtual field trip.” The video features a farmer interview, history of the farm, nutrition facts, and more! We encourage educators to show in the classroom maybe before lunch, breakfast in the classroom, before going to the garden, etc.

Here is our HOTM video this month for organic kumquats. Farmer Ron tells the students how to roll the kumquat between their hands to get the oils/juices out. Reminds them they can eat the WHOLE peel!

You can also find the rest of our videos on our page.

In addition, UC San Diego made a HOTM website as a teacher’s tool.

Hope this is helpful!

Hi Stef and Noli,

Noli, seeing Stef's email below made me think of your program instantly and all the wonderful things you've done with farm to school efforts and Harvest of the Month! I thought you two could connect about this.

Hi Stephanie,

Most of the 36 California Harvest of the Month 4 page Educator Newsletters have a section on school gardens (tips, lessons, ideas, etc.)

See this Educator Newsletter on Cooked Greens as an example https://harvestofthemonth.cdph.ca.gov/documents/Fall/21712/Ed_News_Cooked%20Greens.pdf

Hi Stef,

We have a Harvest of the Month that accompanies Farmer Visits at a select group of schools (though rotating) here at Chicago Public Schools.
