Hi All,

I’m in the very beginning stages of developing a pilot project here in DC and I’m curious if others are aware of something similar in other regions and if they can share any information (project plans, risk assessments, anything!).

I’m interested in piloting school garden programs across multiple schools to demonstrate the successful components (from the GREEN Toolkit)  and the impact gardens have on students/ teachers/community. I want to evaluate these pilot programs like crazy, and present these results to decision makers and funders with the goal to have sustained, funded, and impactful garden programs in every school in DC.

Side note, it would be amazing to do this pilot across multiple regions if anyone is interestedJ.

Thanks!

Hi Sam,

Best of luck with this. I would love to try this with my program at Oak Harbor Public Schools and share data. I oversee five public school gardens I. One district, would that be helpful?

Saint Paul might be too early for this, but we are interested in participating in any way that we can.  Are you thinking of having a virtual meeting about it?  FYI -- I'm currently a student in UMN MN Evaluation Studies Institute --

Sam,

I would also be interested in being part of this conversation, and learning more about the pilot program! We have a School Garden Network in Guilford County, North Carolina, and there may be a number of elementary schools in particular that may be interested!

I'm interested in this idea. Our SNAP-Ed program supports gardens in multiple schools in Iowa. We used the Garden Integration Scale from the GREEN Tool to complete a pre-assessment this year. Plan to do a post-assessment in one year. Would like to know how to best use this data.

Hi Sam,
We’d be very interested in being part of something like this with you to, both as a SGSO supporting schools in Santa Cruz county, and also at a national level, thinking about how we could incorporate such a project/assessment into our national SGSO leadership institute and other events as well.
Best,
Whitney

Sam,
Data would be great. We are interested, here in northern Michigan, in being part of something across regions. Through our FoodCorps service member we oversee two school gardens, and we also share resources with a YMCA summer camp that oversees another school garden. We are in a rural area, and have a unique set of challenges and opportunities. Let us know how we can be helpful.

Hi Sam,

Given the huge response to this thread, it seems clear that there are a whole lot of us who would like to participate and who would benefit from this kind of project. I am guessing that it is mostly the evaluation & reporting part of it that is the big draw, right? I know that there are lots of different assessment tools available out there, on this SGSO Network and elsewhere. But it sounds like there is a desire for some kind of uniform assessment for all programs. Are you looking at doing this? I know that this will be challenging given that our programs are all tailored to different specifics, but I wonder if it’s possible to develop a question bank of standard questions so that there is something uniform to draw from, and a central repository to which we can all report back as well.

I’m happy to help with this if this is the kind of direction you’re looking at… or not if you have it under control! ;)

Tamara

Hi Sam,

Curious how the FoodCorps team in DC is going to be involved in this. Given our network of sites in OR, I'd also be interested in learning more and seeing if we could offer something similar across our service sites

Sam, I run Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids in Delaware.  We currently work with more than 30 schools, and expect to start new programs at 4 schools next year, at which we expect to have an opportunity for evaluation.  Do you have an evaluation tool?  Thianda

hi Sam -

We'd also be interested in an evaluation tool here in Watertown, MA. At the beginning of this thread a you mentioned your plan to "demonstrate the successful components (from the GREEN Toolkit)  and the impact gardens have on students/ teachers/community" this sounds wonderful! what is the GREEN Toolkit? Can you supply us with a link? Then we can frame the conversation around a set of components and the actual tools.

thanks!

Hi Thianda and SGSO champions,
I’ve attached below a document outlining best practices and tools for evaluating garden education programs. These resources were compiled by participants from our past School Garden Support Organization (SGSO) Leadership Institutes  This document is by no means comprehensive, but it does include links to many strong examples of evaluation tools for measuring different impacts of garden education programs. I hope that’s helpful!
Best,
Whitney
