Hello,

Here in Wisconsin, many school districts will start the school year with in-person instruction. We are hoping to compile resources for youth garden educators who are teaching in person with tips and activities/lessons that are doable while maintaining social distancing protocol in the garden.

For those of you who have already been doing in-person teaching either this summer or as the school year begins, I'd love to hear what you've learned, what's worked for you and, just as important, what hasn't.

Thanks for sharing!

Renata

Tucson Unified School District is remote instruction until community spread metrics are hit in accordance with our county health department. In response we wrote a two phase re-entry plan where we work with small groups to get school gardens back online in anticipation of face-to-face, and then pull small groups for social-emotional-learning once school buildings open back up. We met with district leadership last week and were met with enthusiastic support.

With kids in the garden I think SEL is particularly important as a response to COVID-19 anxiety, family stress, and limited socialization. For safety reasons I think it's important to work with consistent cohort small groups and not intermingle.

Attached is a one-pager of our re-entry plan and safety protocol.

In Broward County FL, we have been on remote instruction since mid March. Over the summer, at a local high school, we started a 4-H club and did a weekly garden program.  We prepared home gardening kits of about 12 different vegetables and trees and delivered them to each home. then we had a weekly zoom instruction to talk about composting, permaculture, check in with their plants, etc. Now that school is starting back up next week, but virtually, we will be doing another home delivery and continuing with the weekly zoom session. It was a good experience.

kind regards,

Hi all,

May Tsupros from Partridge Creek Farm in Michigan shared this very helpful resource on the safety measures they’ve implemented for the return to in-person instruction. I am also excited to hear about particular activities that folks find work well with social distancing.

Thanks and Best,
Whitney
