Hi Forum!

We'd love to know what data collection tools you use when looking to evaluate your school garden programs! In our Evaluation, Assessment and Sharing Impact Promising Practice, we have a list of the different types of outcomes for school gardens and how you might go about evaluating them, broken into categories. Each section has some examples you can take a look at but some are missing examples. Do you have any examples to share? Or other best practices in collecting data on your programs?

Thanks so much!

Best,
Tristana

Thanks for sharing, Rick! Always love seeing examples and so cool you have this tool to map across the whole state of Oregon!

I received this response directly from Janelle Manzano of San Diego Unified Public Schools and got her permission to share with the forum. I thought everyone could benefit from what San Diego is doing to collect data on their school gardens. See below:

Hi Tristana,

Hope you are doing well 😊

Saw your call out in the forum and thought it was pretty good timing because I just started a launch of a Google Form to all school sites to fill out last week. This is my first time doing something like this.

The Google Form was developed with my colleague from our Maintenance Department and Master Gardeners. It’s a super baseline start to help us get to know the status of school gardens in our district.

See page 5 of our newsletter that announced the Google Form and call to action.

If you have any questions please let me know!

Kindly,

Hi all,

We are in our newest generation of our school garden survey.  44 questions, pretty in depth.  Done via Surveymonkey.

We had some great data the last time we did it, and expanded it to include a lot more things that are a bit more specific.  It’s pretty cool when you can graph the number of gardens from the first one recorded in circa 1900 to the present..  as well as square footage of all our gardens, what we grow, how we grow, what we teach, how many of us have paid positions, etc.

Hi Everyone,

I realized that Rick Sherman's example of his state-wide school garden survey didn't properly post to the forum for some reason, so I am re-posting here so that you can see an example. Attached word doc includes the full survey questions. See his message below:
