Black History Month: Q&A with Shabazz Larkin
Author of The Thing About Bees: A Love Letter

How do you conquer your fears? With love, of course! Lots of kids are scared of bees. Turns out the author of The Thing About Bees: A Love Letter, Shabazz Larkin was terrified of them too...until he wrote this book and learned a thing or two about these amazing pollinators!

Join this Q & A hosted by The Bee Cause Project as we get to know the author, activist, and artist behind this playful, family-favorite book filled with life lessons and facts about bees!  As Shabazz describes, we will look at bees from "kind to kinda mean." We will explore the creative process of making art and making stories come to life! Shabazz will give kids his advice for helping local bees, becoming environmentalists in their own backyards, and starting their own creative projects. The student-driven Q & A portion promises to stir up some great conversation, connecting bees with food with art with kids.

This unique, pre-recorded webinar will be available on The Bee Cause Project Facebook Live as well as YouTube on February 25, 2021, for educators, students, and families to explore. The Thing About Bees: A Love Letter is available at Readers to Eaters, a publishing company promoting food literacy from the ground up.

Greensboro Science Center in Greensboro, NC

An aquarium, museum, and zoo all in one! This trifecta of unique learning opportunities come together at the Greensboro Science Center (GSC) with the potential to make a lasting impact on the natural world around it. Kids and adults can experience digital, laser, and 3D shows; classes, camps, and demonstrations; a close-up encounter with a 36-foot Tyrannosaurus Rex model — and a lot of bees. They take their mission to preserve and protect pollinators very seriously with ample pollinator gardens on campus.  And the honey harvested at GSC is used in some really unique ways!

February’s Monthly Buzz Classroom Update and Journal Prompt

Calling all beekeepers and bee lovers! When the weather is chilly, honey bees are clustering in the hive snuggling their queen. The center of the winter bee cluster can reach a balmy 90-100 degrees Fahrenheit.  Most native bees like Mason bees are hibernating in Bee Motels and other holes they made in the fall. This is the perfect time for you to plan your bee garden for Spring, organize beekeeping supplies, or learn more about a new species of native bees!
