CCS Farm to School partnered with OSU Extension to create the Growing Teachers Throughout the Seasons growing guidebook. Each teacher who attends the Farm to School training receives a guidebook and all needed supplies to grow the nine items throughout the school year. We also have cooking carts and a smoothie bike that can be delivered to the site for use during harvest tastings.

Do you put together a calendar for your school district that has garden
info, helpful dates, and classroom friendly activities or similar? Does it
include special food related days?

If so how it shared? Printed? Electronically through a google calendar or
similar? Google doc or similar?

How much is shared at a time? The whole year, just the school year? First
half, then second half or monthly?

Do you include pictures? How? Like an old fashioned calendar you hang on
the wall or some other way? (I have so many pictures!)

Is the calendar only for school use or do you allow others (general public)
access it? Do you sell it?

I keep wanting to do this for our 40+ schools that have a food garden,
along with reminders during the harvest months on how to do it safely and
notifying kitchen supervisor ahead of time. Anyway, my brain won’t let go
of the idea.

Btw, I also wanted to provide a tool that can be used for making
nature/gardening notes and observations.

I would love to hear what folks are doing and how they keep it manageable
if it isn’t already a communications tool with garden leads at sites.

I also expected that the calendar would “grow” and change over time - so
the way I would do it this year and next would not be how I do it the
following year.

Thanks so much!

Hi Kirsten-- I love the idea of a calendar, I think that's brilliant! When
I was the School Garden Coordinator for Chicago Public Schools several
years ago, I co-wrote these Garden Planting Guides
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1cGZc6AzegTDiqseoGT2f1ZEAhycEYJ7xWJM6PWwSaic/edit?usp=sharing>
which
include estimated planting dates for each crop; this accompanies the School
Garden Toolkit
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1S8l3oZcPiv1GjSFWC0uckNuEQOR0BhkbAoDSwkAvZuo/edit?usp=sharing>
and other educational materials available on the CPS School Gardens
<https://www.cps.edu/services-and-supports/health-and-wellness/school-gardens/>
website. These are what the district currently offers its 600+ schools as
guidelines (the CPS Eat What You Grow manual
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/19Uy_Budl0qPCnDuPAFppEQjvb5--xYH8h1ZodP4ykPU/edit?usp=sharing>
is
more focused on food safety and garden to cafeteria implementation). But I
think a calendar is a fabulous idea and if you develop it, I would be super
interested to see it!

We use this planting guide and each school gets their own print copy and
electronic copy. We also have a Harvest of the Month calendar that’s a
spreadsheet with monthly produce or local products, recipes, newsletters,
posters, etc.
