Hello all,

I am supporting a school district in Florida to coordinate and systematize school garden support. We plan to include Farm to School and school garden language in the Local School Wellness Policy, but we would also like to incorporate procedures/protections for school gardens into policies related to Facilities and Curriculum.

Have you done this? Do you have examples of how this could be done or boilerplate language we could use?

Thanks so much!

Hello All!

While this is not a school district policy, it is one example of a partnership between an SGSO and a school district to help support school gardens. For 2 local school districts we work with, teachers who want to start a new school garden must first complete a school garden development application - it basically slows them down enough to make a clear plan and get a team on board - and get it signed off by the maintenance dept. This has helped get maintenance on board, and flags potential issues that maybe is not on the teachers radar (future school expansion plans, water access, etc).

Scroll down to "District Support" tab for info and application. https://envirocenter.org/programs/schoolgardens/

Happy to answer additional questions and hear about other ways orgs are partnering with school districts to support school gardens.

Aloha,

The Hawaii State Department of Education Wellness Guidelines can be found via this link.
The Safety & wellness Survey (SAWS) annual online survey of public school principals is used to monitor and evaluate schools’ progress toward implementing the Wellness Guidelines. It is jointly administered by the Departments of Education and Health. Key indicators from the SAWS are included in the Superintendent's Annual report. Click to view the latest Safety and Wellness Survey results.

In the Heath Education and Nutrition Promotion section (HE3) of SAWS includes language about school gardens and place-based, hands on activities:
Nutrition education includes culturally relevant activities that are ‘aina-based and hands on, such as food preparation, taste-testing, farm visits, and school gardens.

Aloha,
Natalie

Hi, Here is a collection of policy related to school gardens and harvesting food, some of the resources include more than just harvest related items. www.lifelab.org/garden-to-cafeteria
This page also shares this resource on sample wellness policy language.

Here is folder of sample agreements between SGSOs and Schools that we have collected and shared at the SGSO Leadership Institute.

Be well,
