Hi Amber-

Have you seen the Understanding Food and Climate Change: An Interactive Guide from Center from Ecoliteracy:

The web version of the guide itself is at:

and also their Understanding Food and Climate Change: A Systems Perspective:

Although I don't think they have worksheets necessarily, the material is great for older youth or even adults - and it covers a number of the topics you have mentioned.

At KidsGardening we also put together a guide for the high school target age called Digging into Soils and I have had emails from a few teachers about using it with remote learners.  More information is at: https://www.diggingintosoil.org/.

Finally, let me point out the Exploring Hydroponics Guide that KidsGardening put together with the National Farm to School Network with information and download at: https://kidsgardening.org/curricula-books-exploring-hydroponics/
Although this was designed with a much younger audience in mind, I find that hydroponics is a topic that really grabs older kids too and I think it would be pretty easy to scale up. We have instructions for a number of DIY systems that your high school students might be able to make at home.

Hi Amber,

Teaching the Food System. The Teaching the Food System (TFS) curriculum was launched in 2011, helping teachers and students around the world explore the relationships among food, public health, equity, and the environment. We encourage TFS users to adopt FoodSpan, our free, streamlined, standards-aligned curriculum that improves upon TFS in response to educator feedback.

Hi Amber,

Captain Planet Foundation partnered with Kiss the Ground on this Quest for Healthy Soils – as part of our Project Hero Quest Series. It uses a project-based construct of “QUEST” (developed by CPF) along the left side of the website which helps students easily navigate through the learning journey:

Question

Uncover

Explore

Solve

Teach

And it has an embedded “teacher” via videos so you can assign portions of the Quest for remote work and then use virtual class time for discussion.  This particular Quest was designed for older students.

If you create an Educator Login (free), you get all kinds of Educator Notes and additional teaching resources that are not available or viewable by your students (who don’t log in).  Would love to hear your thoughts!

(We also have a Pollinator Quest designed for elementary schools students if anyone else is interested!)

Warmly,

Leesa Carter-Jones (she/her)

Hi Amber,

This post has generated such a useful list! Thanks for asking the question, and to everyone for sharing great resources!

I haven’t actually read or used this curriculum yet, but it was recently recommended to me, and at first glance, it looks really promising: https://seedsofsolidarity.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/food-for-the-solfinal-sm.pdf

Also, have you seen the Kiss the Ground movie (free to educators) and accompanying curriculum? This one is designed for middle school, but I imagine it could be adapted for high school, and it focuses on regenerative agriculture.

I hope that’s helpful!

Hi Amber and all-
I read through this thread and looked at all the resources that have been shared.  Thanks!

I just wondered, now that the new school year started, how it is going and if you found any new resources?  I am a volunteer at a middle school in NC and help manage our (young) school garden.  I cannot help with student programming in person yet, so am helping with garden maintenance, and helping find resources to support the teachers.

Thanks for any new info, and happy fall (at least here!)

Take care-
Shauna Farmer
