I am starting a new program with gardening, native plants, and outdoor play on our farm.  many of the activities will be in a wooded area where there are ticks. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with how to rid an area of ticks safely or naturally?

Tick management area-wide is best done through Co trolled burns in your area which renew shrubs and spaces for the other animals to live in your area which feed on ticks and by deer management. Typically those aren't welcome activities in small spaces, but you can reach out to your State's Department of Natural Resources to learn more.

However, there are many best practices for teaching about ticks and doing tick checks to students, for informing families, and for what to do if a tick is found biting in a student's or staff person's body. Also, pro-tip, there's still a lot of False (in my both researched and personal experience opinion) information out there about tucking pants into socks and that sort of thing. Ticks love to find dark cozy places to snuggle into so any place where things are tucked in is actually their favorite spot, especially sick lines, underwear lines and bra lines... Just dress for the weather and do checks!

I've attached one tick info sheet here for reference. Later today, I can upload a file of parent and staff training resources to the SGSO resource area and share that link.

Sincerely,
L
