Sharing a Summer Camp Lesson Resource

Dear School Garden Network,

I wanted to share a resource that was incredibly well received this summer during my work with the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Diego.

I presented Feed the Garden Within You as part of our summer camp program, using the garden ecosystem to introduce elementary and middle school students to the gut microbiome. The garden analogy resonated strongly with the students, every child connected with the concept that we each have an internal garden shaped by the foods we eat.

The lesson sparked meaningful conversations about biodiversity, nutrition, resilience, and the connections between caring for the gardens around us and caring for our own health. It was wonderful to see the students make these connections so naturally and enthusiastically.

I am sharing the presentation in case it is useful to others looking for engaging ways to connect school gardens, ecology, and health education.

Please don't hesitate to reach out. I would love to connect with others exploring similar ideas and continue growing this work together. I believe there is so much potential in helping children see the relationship between caring for our gardens, our communities, and ourselves, and I would enjoy sharing ideas and learning from this wonderful network.

Morning, thanks so much for sharing this resource. We actually started discussing food intake and healthy eating practices with our elementary school students last school year. This will be a great addition to those discussions and activities.
