Kyla,
Natalie called me out below so I’m respondingJ. Some of our school districts here in DC (including our largest DC Public Schools) staff garden programs at their school campuses using district funds. This is usually the result of a savvy principal utilizing existing positions (Science, Technology, and Reading Specialists as well as Wellness Coordinator are all common) to oversee the program, these are .5FTE positions. In schools with PTAs that are able to raise funds, sometimes these .5FTE positions become full-time with these additional funds.
DC Public Schools established a “School Garden Coordinator” position last year, so in theory a principal could request this position when they submit their budget. I’m not sure I can help you with your question about how districts budget for this position, and what this budget looks like. Honestly, if a principal submits a budget request (there were due last week) that includes a School Garden Coordinator Position it’s up to the district to determine if this is a priority, we have had better luck getting garden programs staffed using specialist positions.
The OSSE School Garden Grant funds approx. 400k annually for staffing of school garden programs here in DC, but we leave it up to the district to determine how this gets allocated.
I hope this helps somewhat, I too am curious to see how/if these positions are being budgeted for at the district level.
Best,
I’m attempting to revive this important thread at the risk of deviating slightly from the original question. Are there any school districts out there with a staffing structure in place for the school garden program? For example, is there someone at the central office who supports X# of “school garden coordinators”. What’s the total budget for this and how does this break down? Also, have districts found success providing funds to individual school campuses that then decide how these funds will be spent (hiring staff, etc.) or are funds kept at the central office to hire staff that are assigned to schools that meet the requirements to have a program?
There’s got to be a district out there that has this all figured out!
