Greetings,

This forum topic  Running your SGSO / Supporting Your Staff (During Covid-19)  is the space to discuss tips and ideas for managing your SGSO, such as scheduling staff, professional development opportunities, running evaluations, HR implications, etc

Has your organization:
Come up with any solutions related to running your organization that might be useful to others?
Do you have any "silver linings" to share related to running your organization during "shelter in place" or school closures?
What resources are you relying upon  to manage your staff and organizational operations?

To get the discussion started here are some resources that may be useful for your organization:

BoardSource page on how non-profits and board members can respond to Covid-19  this includes many resources to running your organization and they have opened up their "Ask and Expert" service to everyone.

Most states have Non-Profit Councils, many of which are sharing resources for non-profit support.

Hi Again, Here is a question related to running your organization during Covid-19

Debi LaBelle from the Education Fund in Miami and Grace McGuirk from SAGE Garden Project in Encinitas, CA posed the question of how they continue to run program assessment now that schools are closed. Do you have any ideas on how to continue to collect data program evaluation and/or student assessment data?

Good morning!

My name is Chelsea Lathrop, Events Coordinator and Virtual Academy Producer at Green Our Planet. Are you looking for fun and engaging professional development? Want to learn how to get outside and engage students in your outdoor school garden? Look no further!

Green Our Planet is a 501(c)3 nonprofit conservation organization that runs the largest and one of the most comprehensive STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) school garden programs in the United States. The program’s mission is to increase student academic performance in STEM subjects as well as to conserve and protect the environment through project-based STEM education, which includes nutrition, financial literacy, and conservation education in PreK-12 schools. Through our mission, Green Our Planet helps schools establish comprehensive outdoor school garden and hydroponics STEM & nutrition programs throughout the United States.

Green Our Planet offers three professional development trainings. The trainings are open to anyone interested in learning more about integrating garden and hydroponics STEM education into their teaching practice. Nevada teachers receive 1 PDE credit or 5 CUs for participating in the training and completing online coursework.

How to Integrate Garden STEM 101 is focused on basic garden science and Green Our Planet’s STEM Garden Curriculum. Teachers explore and experience the NGSS aligned lessons, to be used in their outdoor learning gardens. During the training, educators learn from experts on a variety of topics like composting, pollinator gardens and nutrition. This training will take place online in June. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/how-to-integrate-garden-stem-101-online-teacher-training-tickets-104160226040?aff=ebdssbonlinesearch

How To Integrate Garden STEM 102 is offered as a follow-up for “How to Integrate Garden STEM 101”. This course creates the opportunity for teachers to take their school garden a step further by integrating the garden into the culture and community of the school. A key portion of this training focuses on teacher content knowledge of gardening skills. By teaching one another, teachers also share successful classroom management techniques when teaching in an outdoor classroom space. This training will take place online in July.

Hydroponics and School Gardens is offered to teachers interested in using a hydroponics system as a project-based learning tool. A key portion of this training focuses on teacher content knowledge of hydroponic gardening skills. Teachers also have the opportunity to collaborate with one another to design and build a hydroponics system for their school. Please check back for future online offerings of this training.

Greetings,
Here is the archive of our Virtual Gathering on Running Your SGSO / Supporting Your Staff during COVID19.
Attached is a PDF copy of the presentation

During this Virtual Gathering folks shared some great ideas of how they are communicating, training, and adapting their programming and staff support.
Here's just a few ideas:
  • Jezra from Berkeley Unified School School Garden and Cooking Program mentioned this continually updated document of tips for online collaboration tools, professional development suggestions for her staff, and support resources, among other great resources.
  • Other's mentioned using tools such as FaceBook Workplace, Google Quizzes, and Zoom Meeting Room function for continued PD and communications.
  • FoodCorps has a great list of resources of suggested tips for engaging online and professional development ideas for their garden/nutrition educators at https://foodcorps.org/covid19
