Hello School Garden Mentorship Community,
Our next workshop is just around the corner, Tuesday, April 9th from 3:30-4:30. We will be digging into "Outdoor Planting" with Laura-Lyn, retired teacher and amazing school gardener.
Our School Garden Mentor for this session is:
🌱 Laura-Lyn, SD61, Colquitz Middle School
Laura-Lyn established the Colquitz Middle School learning garden in 2017 after five years of planning and organizing. Building on top of a site where four portables were removed, Laura-Lyn, along with parents, students, and administration, built a 2000-square-foot garden.
Later they expanded the vegetable garden to include apple trees and other edible shrubs. Laura-Lyn created a Sustainable Resources exploratory class at Colquitz, and through this course, students planted, maintained and harvested fresh fruit and vegetables. This garden produce was incorporated into bi-weekly farm to school lunches. Every spring and fall, a well-loved chicken rental makes the garden home as well!
Laura-Lyn retired in June 2022 and continues to volunteer weekly in the garden. Also, this spring she is helping her neighbourhood elementary school revitalize their garden which has been unworked and under-loved for the past few years.
See you there!
