The Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Fast Track Practical Nursing program provides students with the theory and skills required to practice as a practical nurse in acute care, extended care, and intermediate care settings. The program of study combines nursing theory lectures with planned patient care learning experiences in hospitals, nursing homes and health care agencies. Graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN). Licensing requirements are the exclusive responsibility of the Arizona State Board of Nursing.

2. A passing score on a nursing program admission test is required to complete an application.
3. Documentation of Health and Safety Requirements.
4. Fingerprint Clearance Card.
5. High school diploma or GED is required. Applicants must signify that they meet this requirement by providing high school diploma/transcripts or GED completion OR by signing the nursing application page containing the `Declaration of High School Graduation or GED completion.` In some instances, high school diploma/transcripts or proof of GED completion may be required.

Pursuant to A.R.S. 32-1606(B)(17), an applicant for professional or practical nurse license by examination is not eligible for licensure if the applicant has any felony convictions and has not received an absolute discharge from the sentences for all felony convictions. The absolute discharge must be received five or more years before submitting this application. If you cannot prove that the absolute discharge date is five or more years, the Board cannot process your application.

Level One Fingerprint Clearance is required for admission into the program. Applicants must present a Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card to be copied by the advisor or designee. If there is any question about eligibility for licensure or certification, contact the nursing education consultant at the Arizona State Board of Nursing (602.771.7800).

Health Declaration:
It is essential that nursing students be able to perform a number of physical activities in the clinical portion of the program. At a minimum, students will be required to lift patients, stand for several hours at a time and perform bending activities. Students who have a chronic illness or condition must be maintained on current treatment and be able to implement direct patient care. The clinical nursing experience also places students under considerable mental and emotional stress as they undertake responsibilities and duties impacting patients` lives. Students must be able to demonstrate rational and appropriate behavior under stressful conditions. Individuals should give careful consideration to the mental and physical demands of the program prior to making application. All students must provide documentation of compliance with all health and safety requirements. Only students in compliance with the mandatory health and safety requirements are permitted to remain enrolled in nursing courses.

Health and Safety Requirements for the Fast Track Nursing Program:
1. Students must submit a Health and Safety Documentation Checklist verifying completion of all requirements and maintain current status throughout the program.
2. Students must submit the Health Declaration Form signed by a licensed health care provider.
3. Students must test negative on a timed urine drug screen.
4. Admission to a nursing program requires that students be in compliance with the Maricopa County Community College District Supplemental Background Check policy. Program applications will not be accepted without a copy of an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card. Upon conditional program admission, the student must comply with all requirements of the current MCCCD background check policy.

Successful completion of this certificate may lead to employment in a variety of different occupations and industries. The Practical Nursing (PN) program is an introduction to nursing. Licensed Practical Nurses provide patient care under the supervision of senior healthcare practitioners. After earning the diploma, a graduated practical nurse must sit for the NCLEX exam. Once passed, the practical nurse is eligible for licensure to become a PN.

Our Practical Nursing diploma program emphasizes critical thinking, clinical reasoning, effective communication and collaboration, and nursing theory.

The Practical Nursing diploma program prepares the student for a foundation of life-long personal and professional learning built upon liberal arts, science and nursing theory courses. The program includes classroom, laboratory/simulation, and evidence based client-centered care learning experiences across the lifespan in a variety of healthcare settings. All practical nurse graduates must successfully pass the National Council Licensing Exam for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) before being able to practice as a LPN.

*References should be recent, written for the purpose of your application to this program and from professors who know you as a student or employers who know you as a professional in a job setting preferably in a supervisory role. Personal references from colleagues, friends, or family members do not meet the requirement.

* Up to three courses can be applied from the JHSON MSN Entry into Nursing program to the DNP Nurse Practitioner and DNP Nurse Anesthesia Tracks.
** Up to 15 credits may be applied from the JHSON MSN Entry into Nursing Program to the PhD Program.

Employment: Many students locate part-time employment to help pay education expenses. Numerous positions are available on campus and within various community based organizations. These jobs provide students with opportunities to gain practical work experience. Most positions are funded through the Federal Work-Study Program. Learn more.

You are not required to have the prerequisites completed at the time you submit your application. However, they must be completed by the time the program starts. The Admissions Committee can accept someone who still has courses pending with the condition that they complete all pending courses with a B- or better.

Graduates of the Ivy Tech Nursing program are qualified to work in hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities, home health care, physician offices, schools, and health departments. Typical career opportunities include:

The nursing program at Ivy Tech has a selective admissions process, which means not all students who apply to the program will be accepted. Students start by applying to Ivy Tech and enrolling in the Pre-Nursing Studies Certificate program, where they complete prerequisite course requirements. Then students apply to the Nursing program.

The LPN to ASN Transitional Track of the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree program is designed for students who are Licensed Practical Nurses seeking to progress to the Registered Nurse (RN) level.

*Note: The number of required ASN nursing course credits will vary depending on whether the applicant is an Ivy Tech Practical Nursing (PN) graduate and date of PN program completion. See your advisor for more information.

The Military Medic to ASN Transitional Track of the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree program is designed for active duty or honorably discharged military medic personnel seeking to progress to the Registered Nurse (RN) level.

The Paramedic to ASN Transitional Track of the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree program is designed for certified/registered paramedics seeking to progress to the Registered Nurse (RN) level.

The Practical Nursing program provides education in conceptual and technical nursing skills and graduates are qualified to provide basic care, under the direction of registered nurses and doctors, for patients in a variety of health care settings such as nursing homes, extended care facilities, hospitals, clinics, home health care, and physician offices.

The Pre-Nursing Studies Certificate (CT) is designed for individuals who aim to be a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Typical professional activities for a CNA include monitoring vital signs, bathing and dressing patients, and assisting with repositioning and walking. Graduates of the Pre-Nursing Studies program are qualified to provide care in a variety of health care settings such as nursing homes, extended care facilities, and hospitals.

The Associate of Science in Nursing and Practical Nursing programs require a major commitment of time and energy. Nursing courses are typically scheduled over 3-4 days per week. Students may also need to schedule additional general education courses as needed each semester. It is essential that you plan for the same amount of study time as class time per week. Nursing course schedules and assignment due dates will not be adjusted to accommodate individual work schedules.
