South Africa has now formally committed to making publicly funded research openly accessible and more reusable, with the policy framing this as part of a wider move towards transparency, collaboration, data sharing and societal benefit.



This policy was designed to promote, facilitate and enable open science, taking into account existing policies, practices and legislation and being cognisant of protecting privacy and consent. It is further aligned with the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science at https://www.unesco.org/en/open-science/about
