Untangling the Future of Diamond Access: Discussing Quality Standards for the Re-communalization of Scholarly Publishing

Diamond Open Access is not just about having no fees for authors or readers. The article argues that its real importance lies in reclaiming scholarly publishing as a community-led, non-commercial, academically controlled system, instead of leaving it shaped by corporate publishers and impact-driven market logics. To make that future viable, the author says Diamond publishing needs institutional support, stronger and clearer quality standards and recognition through trusted, context-sensitive indexing systems such as DOAJ, SciELO, Redalyc, Latindex and similar curated collections, rather than relying mainly on rankings and impact factors. In short: the future of Diamond OA depends on the re-communalization of scholarly publishing, with autonomy, multilingualism and bibliodiversity at its core.
