The Northeast Institutional Repository Day (NIRD) organizers are delighted to invite you to our spring workshop on March 23. There will be two events related to different aspects of institutional repositories. Beyond publication: Configurable Entities in DSpace 7, led by Bram Luyten from Atmire, will be a talk with Q&A at the end. Intro to Python: pandas for Metadata Transformation and Cleanup, led by Michelle Janowiecki from Johns Hopkins University, will be a practical workshop. These events will take place over Zoom. Sign up for one or both! Details and registration information are below.

Sincerely,

Northeast Institutional Repository Day (NIRD) Organizers

Beyond publication: Configurable Entities in DSpace 7

Bram Luyten, Atmire

March 23, 10-11:30 AM EST

Register here

Description:

DSpace 7, the new major version of the widely adopted institutional repository platform, was initially released in August 2021. Two minor updates, 7.1 and 7.2 have been released since.

Join this workshop to learn about new and updated DSpace features, directly from contributors to the Open Source DSpace codebase.

One example of a flagship feature covered in this workshop, are the DSpace 7 Entities. The DSpace 7 Entities concept allows for rich representation and description of content and the relations between content. While DSpace was originally very publication centric, this flagship feature unlocks new use cases for author profiles, datasets, organisational units and any other conceivable data entity associated with the metadata and files of your collections.

The goal of this workshop is to illustrate how a repository administrator can do more with DSpace, and to increase his or her effectiveness thanks to improvements on existing features.

Intro to Python: pandas for Metadata Transformation and Cleanup

Michelle Janowiecki, Digital Content Metadata Specialist; Sheridan Libraries, Johns Hopkins University

March 23, 2-4 PM EST

Register here. This workshop has a cap of 15 participants. If there is sufficient interest, it may be offered again.

Description:

Introduction to Python pandas for metadata transformation and cleanup. This workshop will introduce participants to some of the core functionalities of Python’s pandas library and will show how these functionalities can be applied to clean and transform metadata using example institutional repository data. In particular, the workshop will cover: 1) the basics of Serials and DataFrames, 2) how to remove duplicated data, 3) how to merge data by identifiers, and 4) how to restructure data using pivot. Each topic will be covered by showing real-time cleanup and transformation on the example institutional repository data while also giving tips on troubleshooting and best practices.

The workshop will be kept accessible with minimal setup by using Jupyter notebook to integrate code with visual and narrative explanations for learning. While this workshop will be most useful for those with basic Python or coding experience, participants from all backgrounds are welcome and will gain an understanding of the potential of Python and pandas for metadata cleanup and transformation. Throughout the workshop, participant questions will be encouraged and pauses to check for understanding will be utilized. Due to the hands-on nature of this workshop, the session is limited to no more than 15 participants.
