Intro to Python: pandas for Metadata Transformation and Cleanup
Michelle Janowiecki, Digital Content Metadata Specialist; Sheridan Libraries, Johns Hopkins University
March 24, 10-12PM EST
Register here. This workshop has a cap of 15 participants. If there is sufficient interest, it may be offered again.
Description:
Introduction to Python pandas for metadata transformation and cleanup. This workshop will introduce participants to some of the core functionalities of Python’s pandas library and will show how these functionalities can be applied to clean and transform metadata using example institutional repository data. In particular, the workshop will cover: 1) the basics of Series and DataFrames, 2) how to remove duplicated data, 3) how to merge data by identifiers, and 4) how to restructure data using pivot. Each topic will be covered by showing real-time cleanup and transformation on the example institutional repository data while also giving tips on troubleshooting and best practices.
The workshop will be kept accessible with minimal setup by using Jupyter notebook to integrate code with visual and narrative explanations for learning. While this workshop will be most useful for those with basic Python or coding experience, participants from all backgrounds are welcome and will gain an understanding of the potential of Python and pandas for metadata cleanup and transformation. Throughout the workshop, participant questions will be encouraged and pauses to check for understanding will be utilized. Due to the hands-on nature of this workshop, the session is limited to no more than 15 participants.
