Bulgaria: The OSI Scholarships Program at The American University in Bulgaria
The OSI Scholarship program is administered upon an agreement
between the American University in Bulgaria and the AUBG Program
Coordinators in the eligible countries. All OSI Financial Awards from
2007-2008 will be Full and Partial Awards, and will be given preferably
to good students who otherwise would not be able to cover the full
costs of their education:
Full Awards are called OSI Scholarships and are limited
in number. They cover tuition, residence hall and student activity fees
at AUBG. All students who receive an OSI Scholarship are expected to
cover the cost of food, books, travel, visas and residence permits, and
health insurance. These scholarships cover the eight-semester period
required to complete an AUBG degree provided that the recipient
maintains the required cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Partial awards are need based OSI-funded partial financial aid awards on top of AUBG need and merit based financial aid awards.

Research fellow at BIOS Centre for the Study of Bioscience, Biomedicine, Biotechnology and Society London School of Economics and Political Science.
Fixed Term to 30 September 2009
BIONET is a ‘Coordination Action’ funded under the Sixth Framework
Programme to research the ethical governance of biological and
biomedical research in China and to run workshops and conferences. It
includes 21 partners, including 6 Chinese institutions, and nine
European countries. BIOS at LSE is the lead partner. You will undertake
research, data analysis, writing and publication within the framework
of BIONET, assist with project organization and management, and develop
and undertake individual research relevant to the aims and objectives
of BIONET.
You should have a good first degree, a doctorate in a relevant field
in the social sciences, and experience in undertaking and managing
research projects, report writing and publication. An interest in the
ethics of biomedical research and clinical practice is essential, as is
an interest in China, although previous knowledge or experience of
research in China is not essential. Chinese language skills are not
essential.

UK: Research Assistantship/PhD Studentship in Computing Science
Part-time Research Assistant/PhD Student (60 Months) Computing Science
Computing Science within the Engineering and Physical Sciences School
invites applications for the above post, to provide programming and system
development support for an ambitious programme of research in Natural
Language Generation (NLG), funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences
Research Council (EPSRC).
The Natural Language Generation group within Computing Science is one of the
leading NLG research groups in the world. More information about the group
can be found from its web site at http://www.csd.abdn.ac.uk/research/nlg.
The group is embarking on an exciting five-year project entitled "Affecting
People with Natural Language", which will extend existing knowledge of how
to get computers to generate language which has effects on the actions and
feelings of real people. The research assistant will provide technical
backup to the project and help with the creation and maintenance of
electronic data resources and software based on the group's existing and new
research.

Eligible to apply for postdoctoral funding are applicants who:
- Will perform the postdoctoral studies at a department distinct from that where the PhD was awarded and substantially change their line of research.
- Will defend their thesis at the latest February 1st 2007.
- Have commenced postdoctoral studies at the host laboratory no earlier than May 1st 2006.
- Have defended their thesis no earlier than November 1st 2003. Exceptions up to two years can be made on account of parental leave, illness, military service and internship (allmäntjänstgöring). Please include verification with the application.

UK: PhD Studentship in Medical Physics/Engineering
Swansea University
School of Medicine.
PhD studentship in Medical Physics/Engineering (new terms)
We seek an enthusiastic individual with an interest in scientific computing
and medical imaging to join a 3-year, EPSRC-funded project in magnetic
induction tomography. This is a technique that maps the internal electrical
conductivity of the body and is being developed as a new medical imaging
modality. Of particular interest in this project is the imaging of cerebral
stroke and the potential for a new means of rapid diagnosis that could enable
a more timely treatment.
The work will involve numerical modelling and practical laboratory imaging,
leading to clinical measurements. There will be opportunities to present
results at international conferences. Although based at Swansea University,
you will work as part of an established multi-centre research team involving
the Universities of Glamorgan and Manchester, as well as other industrial and
academic partners. You should have a First or Upper Second Class degree, or
equivalent, in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics or a related field.

The Netherlands:PhD Studentship in Health Economics at Erasmus School of Economics
The Erasmus School of Economics (FEW) has more than 4000 students in
Economics, Econometrics and in Master's Programs. It has a long tradition of
research in a wide range of areas. A large part of the research takes place
within the Tinbergen Institute. The Faculty employs over 400 people. The
candidates for this project will participate in the Decision-and-Uncertainty
group at
the Econometric Institute .
and the Health Economics Department. We are an enthusiastic and
internationally active group, specialized in decision theory, and we
collaborate with psychologists and mathematicians.
Title of project: "Risk and Rationality: Using Empirical Findings from
Prospect Theory to Improve Rational Decisions in Health and Other Fields."
Project
Prospect theory, the model for decision under risk introduced by Kahneman &
Tversky (1979), is immensely popular among psychologists and in applied
economic domains where risk plays a role. Its importance was recognized
through the 2002 Nobel prize in economics, and it is also widely used in
medical applications. Prospect theory assumes that, besides (i) rational
factors based on utility and additive probabilities that are studied in
classical approaches, other factors play a role. Such factors are (ii)
people's sensitivity towards (lack of) information, modeled through
subjective probabilities that can be nonadditive, and (iii) loss aversion
-the special sensitivity of people towards losses. Remarkably, not many
theoretical results have been developed for prospect theory, and empirical
tests have been based on ad hoc interpretations of the concepts of the
theory so far. This project aims to develop theoretical foundations and,
thereby, critical empirical tests for these concepts. It applies its
findings primarily to the health domain. Other fields of application are
insurance, finance, experimental game theory, finance, and/or other areas,
depending on the candidate's background.
