Dear Scholarometer/Fil,
The most basic of basic questions, having registered:
How do you start Scholarometer? Or, understanding that it isn’t an app like PoP that opens easily with a single click, but instead an extension, where on extension page does the user begin a session/search?
I’m no more than ordinarily obtuse, can get myself dressed in the morning, and can cross the street without assistance. But I can’t get Scholarometer to do anything but constantly invite me to download and register, which I’ve now done at least twice. That’s great. But how do I get it to, well, what’s the word I’m looking for? Oh, I got it: work? What simple step/trick am I missing?
Baffled by your cleverness,

Dear Whomever,
OK, figured out how to get S to work. Then did a test drive, working on a scholar search for about 45 minutes. Waded through the list to delete entries not for the named author. Then went through it again to merge duplicate entries. As I searched using keywords, things worked fine until, in the middle of everything, got a pop-up that advised me that either this version of Firefox or Scholarometer, don’t remember which, suddenly was deemed unsupported. So lost all of the uncompleted work, along with the 45 minutes I’ll never get back and the considerable eyestrain I’ll probably never lose. (Already had exported a prelim version of the search, but wanted to compare that output to the screen report after deletions and mergers.) Then tried running S again, receiving the following message, “Error: status code is 503.” Well, that certainly explained itself, as this sort of message usually does; thanks again, Windows. Checked S’s FAQ page; nada on status code 503.
I think I’m getting this. In this laissez-faire web world without concise, comprehensive manuals and on-line help, you bang your head against an app—or extension—for, hours, days or more, until you work out all of the kinks for yourself. Then the next person does the same, and so on. Somehow, doesn’t seem efficient.
Does anyone know what status code 503 means?
