Yesterday I received a package from Modern American Enterprises in
Tallmadge, Ohio. The company had spoken to a secretary at our school by
phone, and asked if they could send info on getting free materials for our
school library. She said yes.
What we received was a box of printed orders and cover letters to be sent
home by classroom teachers. They are selling encyclopedias, and the letter
home makes it sound as though the school is endorsing and selling them.

an others.) The letter asks for interested parents to fill out name,
address, telephone and other details so they can receive further
information.
I see it as an exploitative attempt on the part of a commercial company
to use schools to sell their product, and to build a mailing list and
telephone list through us.
I sent the materials back with a letter saying how displeased I was, and
how unethical I feel their business practices are.
I wonder if anyone else has received this offer. And do you feel about
it the way I do?
