ARMONK, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 30, 1996--Students from all
over the country have been selected as finalists in ThinkQuest(TM),
the Internet contest offering scholarships and other awards that can
exceed $1 million to creators of the best educational tools on the
World Wide Web.

The 98 students and their teacher-coaches, members of 34 teams
chosen as finalists, will gather in Washington, D.C., November 23
with leaders of science, education, government and industry for a
weekend of judging and sight-seeing. Winners will be announced at a
banquet Monday night, November 25, at the Loews L'Enfant Plaza Hotel.
Some of this year's ThinkQuest entries have already been singled out
for excellence. Yahoo!, the Internet directory, selected two entries
as "sites of the week" in October, among what Yahoo! called "the
many excellent ThinkQuest `96 finalists." Education World, an
Internet search engine company, selected a ThinkQuest entry as "best
of October." NETLiNkS! Flavour of the Week, a site on the World
Wide Web that features sites designed by and for African Americans
and Canadians, also honored a ThinkQuest entry.

The Internet Society is managing the judging of the entries,
assembling a team of educators, scientists and others with expertise
suited to each of the five categories in which awards will be made:
science and mathematics, arts and literature, social sciences, sports
and interdisciplinary.

First-place winners in each category will receive $15,000
scholarships, and coaches of these teams will receive $2,500 each.
One entry will be selected as best in contest, winning a $25,000
scholarship for each team member and $5,000 for each coach. Cash
prizes go to the schools of winning teams in all categories.

Entries are judged on the following criteria:

-- Has the entry created collaboration among students, including

those from dissimilar schools?

-- Is it an exciting and innovative educational tool that

exploits and enriches in the Internet style?

-- Once on the Web, is the entry broadly used?

-- Is it accurate, reliable, usable and well documented?

This year, ThinkQuest was open to students in grades 7 through 12
at any school in the U.S. For 1997 the contest will be
international, open to students aged 12 through 18.

ThinkQuest is sponsored by Advanced Network & Services, Inc., of
Armonk, N.Y., a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing
education by accelerating the use of computer network applications
and technologies.

"One of the goals of ThinkQuest," said Allan Weis, president and
chief executive officer of Advanced Network & Services, "is to foster
collaboration among students from dissimilar schools. One team
member's school may be rich in technology, another's may not be quite
as high on the technology ladder. In ThinkQuest, the students work
together to create educational tools that will be useful to people
everywhere."

More than 3,000 students from 49 states, the District of Columbia
and Puerto Rico submitted proposal concepts for ThinkQuest 1996.

"We were thrilled with the number and quality of this year's
entries," said Weis. "The excellence that this year's teams
achieved shows the promise of using technology to improve the quality
of education for future generations."

Proposal concepts for ThinkQuest 1997 can be submitted through
January 31, 1997.

All ThinkQuest entries are available to people everywhere on the
contest's Web site, http://www.advanced.org/thinkquest. Students and
teachers can learn more about ThinkQuest via the ThinkQuest server at
that Web site or by calling 1-800-61-think. There they can receive
help in choosing collaborators, finding a compilation of frequently
asked questions as well as tips and pointers to software tools to
help them build their Web pages.

Advanced Network & Services, Inc., the sponsor of ThinkQuest, is
dedicated to advancing education by accelerating the use of computer
networking applications and technology. ThinkQuest is one of the
programs it has selected to help carry out that purpose. The
organization is a nonprofit corporation that was formed in 1990.
Between 1990 and 1995, it provided the NSFnet Backbone Service and
other Internet services that resulted in 12,000 miles of 45Mbps
circuits serving the U.S. from New England to Hawaii.

ThinkQuest is sponsored by Advanced Network & Services, Inc.,
with support from Educorp Multimedia, IBM, Microsoft, Netscape,
RealAudio and VideoLabs. In addition, ThinkQuest is endorsed by the
Global SchoolNet Foundation, the International Society for Technology
in Education, the Internet Society, and is listed by the National
Association of Secondary School Principals. National sponsors of
