The background color on the monitor used with my Performa 6300 has turned
an ugly shade of grayish-green. All the reds are now black and greens are
yellow. Every so often the natural colors return but not for long. The
computer operates as usual. No other problems. What would be the
problem-and is there any help for it? Thanks for any assistance. Norma

Try getting the monitor degouged. Take it to a TV repair place and have
them do it.

If it's a small area of the monitor, it probably could use degaussing. If
it's the whole monitor and it flickers back, then it's a connection problem
of some sort - either your video card inside the system, the cable
connection, or the red gun in the monitor itself has died. If all the
connections seem secure and wiggling the cable doesn't seem to fix it, the
monitor may be on its way out...

It sounds like the red color gun going bad. Make sure all cable
connections are tight. If that doesn't solve it, call Apple. They had a
large number of monitor problems in machines producd a few years ago. We
had 9 monitors replced in one year because of a color gun problem.

If Apple is unresponsive, you could hope that the red gun adjustment pot
is somewhat corroded and adjust the gun to see if that fixes it. Not
likely though. :-(

It depends on which monitor it is. If it is the Apple 14", 17" or some
other brand you may have to degauss, replace a cable, or you may have to
pitch.

However, if it is the 15" multiscan that came bundled with many of the
Performa 6xxx series you have another recourse: Many of those monitors had
a known defect and Apple had an extended service program for it. Call
their toll free number and keep going through the voice mail options till
you get to a real person. They will instruct you. They just
replaced/repaired my 15" monitor; after 2 and 1/2 years it turned green.
They will ask you to do some troubleshooting first (zap the pram, reinstall
software type stuff). It was about 15 days turn-around to get it back.
