Hello,

My father's computer has a Gateway (2000) any key keyboard installed.
Somehow it has become reprogrammed. Does anyone know how to restore the
keyboard to its factory settings. Or better yet restore it to the factory
settings and lock it from being programmed?

Thanks

According to the little sticker on my Anykey keyboard :
"If your AnyKey keyboard is not working properly, you may have programmed it
incorrectly, or inadvertently typed with it in a programming mode.
To set the keyboard back to normal operation, simultaneously press : CTRL, ALT,
SUSPND MACRO.
If the problem persists please refer to your AnyKey Users' Guide."

Aside from the guilt trip for not being a nerd (first sentence) the advice
works.

To reset a Gateway AnyKey Keyboard simultaneously press the
Ctrl-Alt-Suspend Macro keys.

We have this happen quite often here at the School of Law. The keyboards
came with stickers that provided the information, but most have since been
peeled off. Using a fine tip permanent marker to write the key combination
on the bottom side of the keyboard works great as a quick reference source
for users.

I have never tried to shut off the AnyKey. The owner's manual says to make
this statement the first line in the autoexec.bat (my computer came with
Windows 3.11):
C:\anykey\anykey32 t
It also says you can enter it manually at the "c" prompt: C:\anykey\anykey32 t

I cannot say if it works or not.

Hold down the <Ctrl> and <Alt> keys and then press the <Suspend Macro> key.
It makes a difference whether you use the left or right set of <Ctrl> and
<Alt> keys, but I'm not sure which one is correct to try both. The
program light should flash for a few seconds, and then go out.

I haven't found any way of keeping the keyboard from being programmed.

I have a Gateway programmable keyboard and the directions for
reprogramming it when there is trouble are:

1. Press and hold the Ctrl & Alt keys; then press Suspend Macro.
2. The PROGRAM LED light flashes for a few seconds while the keyboard
reinitializes.
3. When the LED light stops flashing, the process is complete and all
keys are set to the original function.

If that doesn't work the Ctrl or Alt keys may have been remapped.
Then:

1. Press & hold Ctrl and Remap keys simultaneously.
2. Press Ctrl twice.
3. Press Alt twice.
4. Press Ctrl & Remap simultaneously.
5. Follow the above 1-3 steps again.

If that doesn't work, exit Windows, press and hold Suspend Macro, and
reboot the machine by pushing the reset button. Continue holding the
suspend macro button until the system has completed rebooting.

I have had to follow these procedures a couple of times, and I have
no idea how the keyboard got reprogrammed. Sometimes the first
procedure has worked and sometimes I've had to go to the last extreme
one, but eventually things got back to normal.

Press <Ctrl><Alt> and <Suspend Macro> together. You'll know it takes
when the program light blinks rapidly for a few seconds. If this
doesn't work, try a different combination of Ctrl and Alt keys, in case
those are the keys that were reprogrammed.

Our Gateway keyboard often got reprogrammed (see Ron's response) because
of minor disagreements as to whether it belonged on the desktop or the
pullout keyboard tray. To decrease the whining (snicker, smirk...), and
turn off the programming capabilities, I used the steps RBW recommended:
from C prompt, type: c:\anykey\anykey32 t

It does work, thank goodness. No keyboard problems since then except for
keys mysteriously moving around, creating typos.
