Consumer Reports has very little that is up-to-date on
scanners, and I am looking at maybe getting one for my
home...
Where is a good place to look for reviews, etc? The
one I am interested in is a PaperPort flatbed with
600x800 dpi (my HP DeskJet 680c printer is 300x300--I
hope to upgrade it, also).
Please reply directly to mccl...@yahoo.com, as I have
set EdTech to nomail for the summer...
Thanks!

Check out www.zdnet.com - they have good comparative reviews. Personally,
I've always loved the HP line of scanners (and printers, actually). But
they can be a little pricier...

I wouldn't go with anything other than a scsi HP scanner. I have had so
many difficulties installing parallel, cheap scanners on systems, that I
won't even consider recommending them anymore. In technology you get what
you pay for.

The USB version of HP scanners works like a top and you don't have to open
the case for the SCSI board. I agree with you though, I tried a fairly
expensive version of a Microtek and it was a nighmare

USB is a weak attempt to replace scsi, but it is not going to happen anytime
soon. The test results still show that scsi is faster than USB, and more
dependable.

NO NO NO
USB is just the current standard that everyone is trying to get on
promote etc.
Firewire is the new standard here for both videoinput and scanning.
Check out the bandwidth - the difference in input rates is tremendous
