I am thinking about purchasing a digital camera for home use. I would like
one with a zoom lens, but don't want to spend a fortune. Please send any
suggestions that you have.

Madeline...

I have experience with two digital cameras...an Olympus 400Zoom and a Sony
Mavica...both are nice...the kids at school prefer the Mavica because of its
"film" (a 3.5" floppy)...I prefer the Olympus because of its higher
resolution...for a wealth of information on digital photography, take a look
inside rec.photo.digital. You'll not want for info once you have accessed
this newsgroup! :-)

As always...

What ever model you choose...
be aware that an --optical-- zoom is like the 35 mm cameras you may be used
to--the picture gets 'closer' while maintaining its resolution. These
usually cost more and may be more bulky.
--digital-- zoom is just looking more closely at the resolution that
exists--think of looking at a newspaper photo with a magnifying glass---the
dots are the same, quality deteriorates.

The newsgroup rec.photo.digital sure does have a lot of messages (nearly
1000 per day), but they are skewed toward the high-end consumer cameras,
particularly the Nikon Coolpix 950 ("Mine is still on backorder"; "I hate
the dim LCD preview"; "It eats batteries"; "How do I get an external flash
to work" are common threads). For comprehensive digicam information, news
and reviews, check out these web sites:

Just came on this conversation - alot depends on what you are doing
instructionally - unless you are doing high end graphics I think the sony
mavica is GREAT! it's easy, convinient, and gives instant results - the
kids love it and when handling classes of 25-30 who all need a photo it
works so well giving the kids their disk with photo. I would recommend it
strongly!

good luck
