As part of Phase 2 of its Worldwide Distance Education Initiative,
JWPC WORLD SERVICES recently posted the Reading Room to the World Wide
Web.
The Reading Room, an interactive website where Claude of the Forest--an
animated conversational character created and copyrighted by La Cantoche
Productions, a French design firm specializing in the creation of
Microsoft Agent characters--interacts with the viewer to create a
collaborative short story, with input from the viewer woven into the
story line, is the first of a planned series of freeely accessible
websites designed to provide enrichment for teachers and students
everywhere.
"We're very excited about this project," stated J.W.Procopio, President
of JWPC WORLD SERVICES.
"We did our first interactive reading exercise in December of 1999 when
we published SANTA'S STORYBOOK ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB."
The website, which featured Santa Claus helping the viewer to create a
story by weaving user input into the story line, won the Webmaster's
Award for Excellence in website design.
The Reading Room is modeled after the website built in December, with
the exception that the conversational character is different.
La Cantoche Productions, a French design firm which created the
character employed as the host for the Reading Room, has released the
character for free distribution throughout the world over the World
Wide Web.
"If teachers take the time to install Microsoft Agent technology on
their computers in school, and if they take the time to download the
conversational character from the website at http://www.cantouche.com
we will be able to provide them, and their students, with free
enrichment resources over the World Wide Web," Procopio added.
To view the website, which is in its earliest stage of development,
viewers will need to download the character named CLAUDE from the
download site at http://www.cantoche.com
System requirements for viewing the website include the use of
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 or better with Microsoft Agent
core components installed.
The Reading Room can be accessed by going to:

Schools and educational organizations wishing to collaborate with the
firm to provide custom interactive distance learning experiences for
their students are invited to send email to:
