KATHIE L. OLSEN SELECTED AS NASA CHIEF SCIENTIST

NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin selected a biologist,
Dr. Kathie L. Olsen of the National Science Foundation, as
the space agency's chief scientist, effective May 24.

Olsen will be the Administrator's senior scientific
advisor and principal interface with the national and
international scientific community. She will be responsible
for ensuring that NASA programs are universally regarded as
scientifically and technologically valid. She also will act
as principal advisor to the Administrator on the budget
content of NASA's science programs. Olsen will place special
emphasis on the biological sciences, particularly biomedical,
neuroscience and life sciences.

"NASA's Chief Scientist has a tremendous responsibility
to represent the Agency's scientific objectives to the
outside world, including other federal agencies, industry,
academia, governmental organizations and the international
community," Goldin said. "Dr. Olsen is a highly motivated
and scientifically focused individual, whose expertise both
inside and outside the Agency will serve us well. I am
pleased she has agreed to accept this position."

Olsen has most recently been a senior staff associate in
the National Science Foundation's Office of Integrative
Activities since December 1998. She held numerous other
science-related positions within the Foundation dating back
to 1984.

Among Olsen's many awards, she earned the National
Science Foundation Director's Superior Accomplishment Award
and the International Behavioral Neuroscience Society's award
for important contributions in that field.

Olsen received her Ph.D. in psychobiology/neuroscience
at the University of California at Irvine in 1979 and became
a postdoctoral fellow at Children's Hospital of Harvard
Medical School in 1979 and 1980. She then spent eight years
in various teaching and research positions at the State
University of New York - Stony Brook.

Olsen resides in Arlington, VA.

ThinkQuest Junior Presents the Nation's Top 4th, 5th, and 6th
Grade Web Designers with Prizes Totaling $250,000

At a real-video awards ceremony ThinkQuest(R) Junior
honored our nation's most promising young Web designers with cash and
awards totaling $250,000. A philanthropic and educational initiative
created by Advanced Network & Services, Inc., more than 1,200 teams of
up to six students competed in the second annual ThinkQuest Junior
Awards contest.

The on-line ceremony gave students, teachers, and web enthusiasts
an exclusive look at some of the best educational sites of the year
created by fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students. Some of this
year's most memorable entries included a visually stunning site on the
art of origami called Pieces and Creases - A Fun Guide to Origami
(http://tqjunior.advanced.org/5402/);
a thought-provoking look at violence on television with I Want my
NTV! (http://tqjunior.advanced.org/5676/); and Yo, It's Time for
Braces, a site about coping with this dental dilemma
(http://tqjunior.advanced.org/5029/).

The awards ceremony designated the top Web sites in a variety of
categories - Arts & Literature, Science & Mathematics, Social
Sciences, Sports & Health, and Interdisciplinary. More than 600
ThinkQuest '99 contest entries, including this year's winners, will be
featured on ThinkQuest's library of entries (www.thinkquest.org). All
of the sites are made freely available to elementary school students
and teachers for inclusion in classroom curriculum and are used by
millions of visitors worldwide.

"ThinkQuest has long considered the Internet to be the
educational medium of the future," commented Allan H. Weis, president
and CEO of Advanced Network & Services Inc., the nonprofit
organization that created ThinkQuest Junior. "However, judging from
the quality of the winning sites seen at yesterday's competition, the
future may be much closer than we think."

The ThinkQuest Junior program is a classroom-based competition
that encourages girls and boys in grades four to six to take advantage
of the Internet as an information resource and a collaborative tool.
ThinkQuest Junior teams work together for more than five months to
create highly interactive, well-researched Web sites on an educational
topic of interest to them. Winners of this highly competitive event
pass through an extensive judging process to reach the final awards event.

About ThinkQuest

ThinkQuest is the largest and fastest-growing Internet-based
education program in the world. Nearly 1,000 student-created Web sites
have become part of its master site, which is maintained for use by
educators, students, businesses, government agencies and citizens
everywhere. The most heavily trafficked educational destination on the
Internet, its subject matter ranges from Mars exploration to the
physics of baseball to the plays of William Shakespeare. Students
compete in five areas: Science & Mathematics, Arts & Literature,
Social Studies, Sports & Health, and Interdisciplinary. The challenge
aims to encourage collaboration, leadership, critical thinking and
help raise students' technological expertise.
