Youshould take your time in this beautiful part of the world so you can explore and enjoy as much as possible. Close to the beautiful beaches of the Indian Ocean as well as the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, on the crest of the hills overlooking a valley of leafy suburbs and village centres with a year-round holiday climate of warm summers and cool winters, this area beckons for a visit.

TThe villages offer the creature comforts one would expect from a holiday destination, including spas, B&Bs, fine dining, sophisticated shopping centres, outdoor adventure and local arts and crafts unique to the area. Conveniently located midway between the coastal hub of Durban (now known as eThekwini) and the provincial capital Pietermaritzburg, the region is ideally suited to a lazy day browsing through the many arts, crafts, collectibles and curios found here.

TThe world-famous Comrades Marathon runs through here in June and the Amashova cycle race follows the same route in October. The raging Umgeni River in the valley below is the testing ground for participants in the gruelling Dusi Canoe Marathon every February.

MMariannhill Monastery, established by Roman Catholic monks more than a century ago, boasts striking architecture and an art gallery, while the Umgeni Choo-Choo steam train departs from Kloof Station on the last Sunday of every month and winds through the Valley to Inchanga for lunch before returning home.

The nature reserves of Assagay, Springside and Krantzkloof Gorge offer respite from the bustle of the modern urban lifestyle, but the adventurous might prefer paragliding or rock climbing at Inchanga and Monteseel, or mountain biking at Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park.

We arrived to find a stunning lodge perched on top of a hill with 3 campsites just down the hillside. There was a stunning view over the deserted valley below and after setting up camp, we climbed up to the lodge to enjoy it with a cold gin and tonic from the bar. At sunset, we made our way back down to our campsite and had a braai watching the (almost) full moon rise.

The Valley of a 1000 Hills forms around the majestic valley created by the Mngeni River and it's tributaries. A magnificent gorge between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, the Valley of 1 000 Hills is about more than its spectacular greenery and the clear blue of the African sky. Its even about more than the breath-taking photo opportunities and idyllic backdrops to your holiday memories.

The Valley of 1 000 Hills is situated between the massive urban metropolis of Durban and capital city of the province, Pietermaritzburg. The valley is the meeting point of the Umgeni and Msunduzi rivers, making it a place of unrivalled natural beauty. The Umgeni flows all the way from the mammoth Drakensberg to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

This region is also famous for its deep and complex culture and history. The province was once the homeland of powerful Zulu tribes and villages. When the Boers and the British were vying for territory, though, there were many bloody battles. Today, the battlefields serve as reminders of the exorbitant price once paid for such magnificent territory. These can be visited on battlefield tours, and the museums in the area are a fascinating addition to any historical tour.

There are many cultural villages that still occupy parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Valley of 1 000 Hills. Visiting these villages means getting a sneak-peek into the traditional lives of the local African people. See their huts, visit their medicine men, taste their traditional food, enjoy song and dance performances, and meet with the people that call this home to have a real glimpse of the South African experience.

Of course, an area this spectacular is just begging to be explored. So, take advantage of the many walking, hiking, running and cycling trails through the valley. The mountains are excellent for rock climbing, abseiling, and heading out on 4 x 4 adventures.

The Valley of 1 000 Hills is well-equipped with hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and other accommodation. It has an excellent infrastructure so that visitors from all over the world are assured of quality and convenience amidst the beauty. The King Shaka International Airport is within a short drive from many of the attractions in the area.

The breath taking Valley of a Thousand Hills is a mere half hour drive from Durban and like the rest of amazing South Africa, is a holiday destination that that will captivate and enchant you with her unspoilt nature, magnificent scenery, wining and dining and warm country hospitality. As the name suggests, the area is made up of thousands of hills, valleys and cliffs that tumble down to the great Umgeni River.

Nice campsite with beautiful view. Each campsite has private bathroom (toilet, hot shower) and sink. Camping is 280 pppn. It is possible to have good dinner at the lodge for 390 pp, but you have to tell them well in advance. So it is best to call in advance if you need dinner. There are also bungalows available. Again, the reason to come here is the view. I stayed for two days and hiked around in the area.

WiFi and possibility to charge things at the lodge, 4G signal (MTC) at campsites

Absolutely beautiful, incredible views and sunrises. A bit pricey though compared to other campsites nearby with much better ablutions. R570 per night for 2 people. They have firewood, beer and a lodge that you can eat in.

Crazy view, owner is very kind. The valley is on the east side so at sunset the 1000 hills are orange. In the morning you will admire a wonderful sunrise. Cherry on the cake, the view on the valley when you open the door of the bathroom after shower.

On the comments about BigRig. We are 8 m long and need for a U-turn 17 m, it was no problem. The way up to the lodge is a bit narrow. If you have doubts stop at the point where it goes left to the lodge and right to the bungalow and walk to last 200 meter to the lodge.

3 sites. We were the last to come so site 2 was ours. Stunning view. We payed 200 N$ p.p. Very friendly host. We came in at 18:45 so we were happy that there was place for us. on C14 was a sign that says 7 km. to the campsite, but when your at the entrance you have another long way to go. last bit of the road was heavy. Didn't need the 4x4.
