Proponents say GMOs increase food yields and allow for greater food production, but this has yet to be proven. They also claim they are safe, but no long term human studies have been done. This makes the introduction of GMOs into the food supply the largest uncontrolled experiment on human health ever performed in America and in many other countries too. And there is plenty of evidence to be concerned. In an effort to opt out of uncontrolled experiment, people everywhere are avoiding GMOs by choosing organic. Many people buy organically grown food out of a vague sense that it is “healthier.” This view isn’t wrong necessarily— the fact is organically grown food is indeed better for health.
But specifics drive commitment. When it comes to organically grown food, unless we know exactly why it’s better for us, our resolve to seek it out — and spend more for it — will eventually wane.
So… late last month, I attended Paleo f(x), an annual three-day conference in Austin, Texas, devoted to exploring food, exercise, sleep, and other lifestyle factors through the lens of human evolution.
The most prominent speaker was Dr. David Perlmutter, neurologist and author of the books Grain Brain and Brain Maker. He’s an ardent advocate for organically grown food, and his reasoning is a bit different — and more compelling — than what I’d heard before.
Glyphosate, Your Gut, and You Dr. Perlmutter is perhaps the world’s leading authority on the intimate relationship between the brain and the microbiome — that is, the roughly two pounds of microorganisms that live in our digestive tracts.
There’s abundant evidence that a disrupted microbiome raises the risk for a disordered brain, including conditions such as anxiety, depression, and autism.1 There’s also good evidence suggesting that the microbiome of modern Americans is far different — and far less health supporting — than it was during most of human history.2 As Dr. Perlmutter explained, there are many reasons for this, including the fact that modern Americans consume vast quantities of highly processed carbohydrates in the forms of sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and corn- and wheat-based foods. The Surprising Part But most surprising was the role that Dr. Perlmutter believes a potent herbicide called glyphosate — the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup — plays in the terrible state of gut and microbiome health in modern America. The initial pitch for legal approval for glyphosate, Dr. Perlmutter explained, claimed it was safe because it was nontoxic to human cells. But as a patent application explains, glyphosate attacks an enzyme process in bacteria called the shikimate pathway.3 Essentially, Perlmutter said, this means that “glyphosate is an antibiotic. So why should we care if it kills only bacteria? Because you have 10 times more bacterial cells in your microbiome than you have human cells.” Now consider the fact that most genetically modified crops are “designed” to boost their resistance to glyphosate… and this stuff is now drenching American crops, which means Americans are eating more of it than ever before. I must note here that direct evidence implicating glyphosate in human microbiome disruption is lacking. At this point, it’s just a theory. But the logic is sound. I suggest not waiting for confirmation, since there is an easy alternative: Buy organic. You should do so because organically grown crops are always non-GMO and are not treated with glyphosate. Glyphosate, at least in theory, has the potential to seriously disrupt the human microbiome and consequently the human brain and body. Bottom Line Certainly, this is not the only reason to buy organic. Another is that organic food has been shown to be higher in nutrients than conventionally grown versions. A huge meta-analysis of over 300 studies published in 2014 in the British Journal of Nutrition found that organically grown produce — ranging from broccoli and carrots to blueberries and apples — has substantially higher concentrations of a range of antioxidants and other potentially beneficial compounds.4 But overall, I find Dr. Perlmutter’s reason to be the most compelling. By refusing to buy GMOs and glyphosate-soaked food, you not only protect your health, but you also withdraw your financial support from destructive agricultural practices. If enough people do so, we’ll reach a tipping point at which farmers refuse to use this toxic stuff. Then, and only then, the tide of glyphosate — and the diseases it provokes — will at last begin to ebb. Sincerely, Brad Lemley Chief Health Officer Laissez Faire’s Living Well PS: GMO companies say GM foods are safe, but the truth is 44,000 pages of internal memos from the FDA show its own scientists agreed that GMOs could create unpredictable, unsafe, and hard-to-detect allergens, toxins, diseases, and nutritional problems. But, there’s even more they aren’t telling you. We recently released a video where we detail the entire truth behind this uncontrolled experiment with your health …Click here to watch it now, while it is still available.
