Hope everyone's doing well amid the ongoing heat wave! I thought I'd alert you all to a very apropos climate-themed meetup by Civic Tech DC taking place tomorrow, June 26, in the downtown area. All the GIS/tech project presentations on the agenda will focus on a topic that will interest many of you: extreme heat in urban areas.

The first in Civic Tech DC's new series of "Community Exchange" events on issues affecting the DC area, this meetup has adopted climate change as its theme. It'll feature three short talks by folks working on projects that all center on the urban-heat dimension of climate change but that explore it from different angles and with different techniques — from satellite imagery and mapping, to tree planting and nature-based solutions, to community science and data analysis.

Presenters:
  • Street Level Mapping of Tree Canopy for Heat Response (Dan Joseph, American Red Cross)
  • Using Open Data and Planting Trees to Address DC Heat Islands (Michaila Musman, Casey Trees)
  • 3D Urban Heat Mapping of DC Through Citizen Science (Juan Pablo Hurtado and Eric Hackathorn, NOAA)
Logistical details:
  • Venue: Virtru
  • Address: 1801 Pennsylvania Avenue NW; 5th Floor; Washington, DC
  • Nearest Metro stations: Farragut West (Orange/Blue/Silver lines), Farragut North (Red Line)
  • When: Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at 6:30 PM–8:45 PM (potentially followed by a happy hour nearby)
  • Registration: Free... RSVP here: https://www.meetup.com/civic-tech-dc/events/300254003
Hope to see some of you there!
