Subject: [earthdatawebinars] Announcing Data Training Webinar 7/30: Topic- SWOT Hydrology Datasets & Tools
Reply-To: "Brennan, Jennifer L. (GSFC-423.0)[ADNET SYSTEMS INC]" <jennifer....@nasa.gov>--Good morning, afternoon, and evening, webinar listserv subscribers,I am writing to announce our next NASA ESDIS data training webinar, “From Space to Solutions: Access, Visualization, and Analysis Services for SWOT Hydrology"to be held on Thursday July 31, 2025, at 2 PM EDT (-04:00 UTC).*Please excuse any duplicates for those of you on the original invite list*Webinar POC: Jennifer Brennan, NASA Earthdata Webinar Host, Task Lead, NASA ESDIS User and Mission Support Office (EUMSO)Contractor: ADNET Systems Inc.Email: Jennifer....@nasa.govFor more information and to register: https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/learn/webinars/from-space-solutions-access-visualization-analysis-services-swot-hydrologyDescription:Join us on Wed., July 30 at 2:00 p.m. EDT (-04:00 UTC) to explore Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission hydrology data collections of rivers and lakes, and to learn how to work with SWOT hydrology data using tools provided by both NASA's Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).This webinar will explore SWOT hydrology data collections of rivers and lakes, highlighting tools provided by both NASA's PO.DAAC and United States Geological USGS. Webinar participants will learn how to work with SWOT hydrology datasets using Hydrocron, the Water Information from Space (WISP) dashboard, and NASA’s Earthdata Geographic Information System (EGIS) GIS Feature Service—developed by NASA PO.DAAC, for the SWOT River Reach collection.About the data tools:
- Hydrocron is an API developed by NASA’s PO.DAAC that simplifies access to SWOT hydrology datasets by converting them into formats optimized for time-series analysis. Users can retrieve SWOT observations in CSV or GeoJSON by specifying a reach or lake identifier along with a few basic parameters.
- The WISP dashboard, developed by USGS, leverages Hydrocron to provide interactive visualization and download of SWOT data alongside USGS gauge measurements.
The EGIS Feature Service can be added to your preferred GIS desktop software or accessed programmatically to visualize and analyze river data while avoiding the need to download.
Presenters:
Nikki Tebaldi, Scientific Applications Software Engineer, NASA PO.DAACNikki Tebaldi is a Software Engineer at NASA's PO.DAAC, where she contributes to the development of cloud-based solutions for Earth science data. She is one of the core developers of the Hydrocron API and has played a lead role in migrating and operationalizing data processing workflows in the cloud. Nikki's work includes transitioning on-premises workflows to cloud infrastructure for producing GHRSST Level 2P and Level 4 MUR Sea Surface Temperature datasets, as well as architecting a cloud-based workflow for generating river discharge parameter estimates from SWOT data. She is dedicated to developing scalable, resilient cloud architectures and collaborating on strategies for migrating scientific workflows to the cloud.
Nicholas Tarpinian, Science Data Visualization Engineer, NASA PO.DAACNicholas Tarpinian is a Visualization Engineer with a Geographic Information System (GIS) background at NASA’s PO.DAAC. Nicholas has helped lead the NASA’s Earthdata GIS (EGIS) initiative in developing GIS ready web services of PO.DAAC data. He also works on providing end user tutorials of accessing PO.DAAC data through GIS, for example StoryMaps and coding tutorials. Nicholas wants to continue to provide a variety of ways for users in accessing NASA data through GIS.
Merritt Harlan, Ph.D., Mendenhall Postdoc, Research Hydrologist, Hydrologic Remote Sensing Branch, USGS
Dr. Harlan’s research focuses on remote sensing of inland waters, with a focus on radar remote sensing from the Surface Water Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite. Dr. Harlan is interested in applying remote sensing data to estimate river flows in ungaged basins, assess changes in surface water in lakes and rivers, and compare and evaluate the accuracy of satellite-derived stage and streamflow to field data and modeled data.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions. Also, feel free to share this invite with your colleagues.
Best Regards,
Jennifer
