SCGIS DC happy hour November 15th!

Hi all,

I hope your Novembers are all off to a great beginning. Coming up on November 15th is GIS Day, first initiated and celebrated in 1999 by Jack Dangermond and ESRI (interestingly, according to Wikipedia, Jack Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with inspiring GIS day). In honor of this fine day, Pui-Yu and I are organizing a happy hour!

When: 5:30pm, November 15th
Where: Astro Beer Hall, right by Metro Center

Come on out and mingle with your fellow mapping enthusiasts. Hope to see you there!

Hi Vivian and fellow SCGIS-DC chapter colleagues!

Vivian thank you so much for organizing a venue for our community to gather together in celebration of GIS day. I am sorry to miss this one, but only because I will be down in Williamsburg VA with the new student Chapter of SCGIS at College of William and Mary, celebrating GIS Day with them! Have fun everyone and I hope to see you at a DC Chapter event sometime very soon - Thanks again Vivian and Happy holidaze to you all,

The closest metro stop is Metro Center, as mentioned by Vivian, but there are few metro stops that are also close by: https://maps.app.goo.gl/TAeWAT7AwKdgxp3YA
I will try to get there at 5pm to get a table.

So nice to meet some of y'all last night! Thanks for showing up to celebrate GIS, alongside half the working population of DC :) Check out the group photo attached.

Nice to see old friends and meet new ones! Whoops - I didn't realize that there was a pic being taken and was pestering Maria about volunteering at the SCGIS conference - that'll be so fun to have it relatively near DC.

It’s great to see all of the smiles— thank you Vivian for sharing— looks like a great time! And a big thank you as well to Vivian and Pui-Yu for organizing!

For those of you who did not see the official SCGIS announcement about the 2024 Annual Conference (in person!!), I will forward the email next. As Joel mentioned, the conference will be held here outside of DC in September at the NCTC in Shepherdstown WV, which is very exciting! 

We will be looking for some volunteers who can help— Maria Zubkova, who was at the happy hour last night, is our SCGIS Conference Committee co-chair and she will be leading volunteer efforts. Be on the lookout for more announcements to come!

I hope that everyone has a great upcoming Thanksgiving holiday!
