Hi SCGIS-DC,
I hope that everyone is having a wonderful summer so far!

We are quickly coming upon SCGIS's 26th International Conference, which will be held virtually August 16-18!  Please register for keynote speakers, workshops, presentations, and virtual networking.

To celebrate the conference, we will hold a SCGIS-DC in person networking happy hour starting at 5pm on Tuesday August 15 at the outdoor beer garden where we met last year, Wundergarten DC in the NOMA neighborhood. Please look for our SCGIS sign on one of the picnic tables.

I really encourage you to check out the SCGIS conference-- we have a great lineup of interesting offerings. Our conference workshops, taking place August 14th, 15th and 19th, cover topics such as Spatial Data with R Part 1: Intro to R for Newbies, Spatial Data in R Part 2: Data Processing and Analysis for Conservation, Introduction to LIDAR, Comparing Two Field Data Gathering Tools: ArcGIS Survey123 and ArcGIS Field Maps, ArcGIS StoryMaps, and Working with ArcGIS Field Maps.

We are also excited to introduce two outstanding keynote speakers to address our theme “Nature: From Loss to Sustainable Use.”

Dr. Meredith Gore is on the faculty of the Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland, College ParkShe is a conservation social scientist with interest in understanding human dimensions of global environmental change such as biodiversity loss and climate change. Dr. Gore brings an interdisciplinary perspective to a range of conservation issues such as wildlife trafficking, illegal fishing and illegal logging.

Dr. Carlos Klink is a native Brazilian and a professor of Ecology at the University of Brasilia. A former National Secretary for Climate Change and Deputy-Minister of the Environment of Brazil, Dr. Klink has 37 years of experience working with land-use, climate change, and climate finance, partnering with corporations, financial institutions, trade forums, governments, academia and NGOsTo learn more about current work, see https://cerradoinitiative.eco.br/.

Please mark your calendars-- looking forward to seeing you at the happy hour!

Best,

Hi SCGIS-DC,
I am looking forward to attending the upcoming virtual SCGIS Annual Conference this week, to be kicked off with an in-person DC Chapter Happy Hour on Tuesday evening! We will meet at 5pm at the outdoor beer garden where we met last year, Wundergarten DC in the NOMA neighborhood. Look for our SCGIS sign on one of the picnic tables!

Please note that this is a no-host happy hour, so folks will be responsible for their own checks.

Thank you and see you soon!
Best,
Janet

Hi SCGIS-DC,
Because of the rain and chance of thunderstorms this evening, the happy hour will be re-located to a nearby indoor venue called Red Bear Brewing Co. It is a 4-minute walk from the NOMA red line station and is located next to the REI store.

Please look for a table (likely near the bar) with SCGIS signage; if it seems unclear I'll send an update once situated!

Thanks and I'm looking forward to seeing y'all (and staying dry doing so)!

Best,
Janet

For those of you coming out tonight, I’ve grabbed some larger tables behind the bar (walk around the the right) next to the rainbow stage!
