RWBY is an ongoing American web series created by Monty Oum and produced by Rooster Teeth Productions. RWBY premiered on July 18, 2013, on the Rooster Teeth website. Episodes were later uploaded to YouTube and streaming websites such as Crunchyroll.[1] As of April 2023, 116 episodes, spanning 9 volumes, have been released. Vol 9 premiered on February 18, 2023, and concluded on April 22, 2023.[2]
Volume 3 was confirmed at the Rooster Teeth panel at PAX Prime 2014, where creator and director Monty Oum stated that he planned to go into development of the next Volume right after he was done with Volume 2. The release of Volume 3 was postponed because of Oum's sudden passing in early 2015.[8] Weeks later, producer Gray Haddock announced that the series would continue, with Volume 3 premiering in 2015.[9] Chapter 1 was released for "sponsors" only on October 24, 2015, followed by the release on YouTube the following day.[10] Starting with Volume 3, the release day for new Chapters was changed from Thursday to Saturday, with a new release time of 10 am CST.[11] Before the release of Chapter 7, Gray Haddock announced that from this point on, RWBY would be incorporating darker and more mature elements to the story. He advised those responsible "for a very young viewer" to watch the episodes before deciding if they want to show them to a child.[12] Volume 3 concluded on February 13, 2016. This was the last volume in which Oum was credited as a writer.
Volume 2 features twelve episodes. However, in this volume, all of the released episodes are full length, twelve-to-fifteen-minute episodes, rather than being split into halves. Volume 2 ran from July 24th to October 30th, 2014, after which it was released on DVD and Blu-ray.
Volume 3 also features twelve episodes of around sixteen minutes in length; however, "End of the Beginning" ran just over 28 minutes in length, making it the longest RWBY episode in the series thus far. The first episode of the third volume premiered on October 24th, 2015, and the finale premiered on February 13th, 2016.
"RWBY Complete" is the volumes of "RWBY" presented as full-length, feature films without chapter breaks and credits. The Complete versions of the first four volumes were originally released on the DVDs and Blu-rays for the volumes as movie versions. Rooster Teeth would later repackage them as "Complete" on their website and Animation YouTube channel, including the later volumes.
So with the conclusion of Volume 3, my patience and struggle with the quality of RWBY has finally been rewarded. After two volumes of disappointment, Volume 3 had me at the edge of my seat, and at times nearly in tears. With such a drastic change in opinion, episodic reviews would likely be appropriate. However, after some consideration and after analyzing my overall view on Volume 3, I knew episodic reviews would become extremely redundant. So I decided to format my review in one bulk, for the sake of time and just general convenience.
These first two episodes managed to make me forget how disappointed I was with the first volume and simultaneously doubled down on everything that made me watch the series in the first place. Time would tell if that attention would be deserved.
They wanted more Cinder and Neo in the volume but had to cut back. But to compensate they had to be instrumental to the collapse of Ironwood (Miles first said collapse of Atlas so wonder if he slipped up)
They talked about the order of who was going to fall a lot. Yang ended up being the first one since it felt like a signoff due to her getting a lot of focus this volume. They only wanted one character to fall in this episode.
RWBY Volume 9's is released on February 18th, but why not on Rooster Teeth after its release? What are the financial strategies and benefits for Rooster Teeth of allowing Crunchyroll to stream RWBY instead of their platform and then release the entire volume 9 next year from a business standpoint?
This is the lesson that Ruby needed to learn throughout this volume and, in a way, the show as a whole. She is not the perfect fairy tale hero she has always wanted to be. She is not her mother. But she does not need to be, nor should she be. All she needs to be is Ruby Rose.
Since Miles Luna and Melanie Stern provided tweets over the week prior, a lot of anticipation was setup as to what chapter 6 of this volume would be like in the Brunswick farms setting. From a narrative standpoint, it is great to know that certain big reveals and topics fans were impatiently tapping their feet over wanting to learn about had been brought forth. However, what did the episode offer in terms of behind-the-scenes discussion?
But putting that glaring mystery aside, now is time to get into what Miles Luna has been very open about sharing since the episode premiered: the Apathy Grimm and the plot for Brunswick farms. Since episode 191 of the Rooster Teeth Podcast, it has been slowly unveiled each passing volume between blu-ray audio commentaries, interviews, live streams, Q & As and any other behind-the-scenes sources as to which ideas were conceived between Monty Oum, Miles and Kerry before working on the script for volume 1 in 2012 and which ones came after. It was revealed through the volume 4 directors audio commentary that Corsec and Fennec Albain were originally meant to be the main antagonists of volume 1 and that Roman Torchwick was intended to have a much smaller role before he was cast by Gray Haddock and Monty, Miles and Kerry came to find the character appealing enough to span his relevance for more than one volume. It was hinted at during the volume 2 mid-season live stream that there was indeed a specific reason why the moon was shaped the way it was but that they kept hush-hush about the matter for now. Once again, going back to the volume 4 directors audio commentary, Miles was the one that came up with the story of the gods while working on the production of Red vs Blue season 10.
The villains were great. Cinder was still pretty annoying to me, I felt that Raven needed a better antagonist to fight. Hazel, it was unclear to me at first but his motives were quite reasonable because IIRC it had a lot to do with what Ozpin did and bringing children to war but we werent shown his backstory, we were just hinted it I believe and that is what made his hate and rage less important or it didnt have an impact. Now for the heroes, Ruby was still dumb and oblivious as always, I question why she didnt change when she saw things in V3. I know she might want to keep her cool, but then that makes her less interesting. A lot of things were ignored about her. Then V5 comes and Ruby is like even more cringey. I generally didnt like Blake as a character and I somehow dont like her more this volume. Always been mean to Sun. Yang is no longer what she used to be and not in a good way. Weiss shoulda been the main character. Interesting background, motives etc and it was crystal clear the way they presented it to us.
@red_ruby_petal: fair enough about the pacing. Though there really wasn't any way to fix that other than making the Volume longer, or by stretching it out to two volumes. Neither of those would have worked and would cost too much money to pull off. So there wasn't many ways around it.
Blake pushes her friends away due to feeling that they will be hurt by her past. This was addressed and dealt with on volume 4. And she didn't hit Sun once during Volume 5 and didn't push him away, instead, she actually relied on him. Showing Character growth.
It used to be that whenever RWBY came out, it would first air on the Rooster Teeth website through their First subscription program. However, as of Volume 9, Rooster Teeth has made the decision for RWBY to air exclusively on Crunchyroll. Geoff Yetter also addresses this change in the Volume 9 FAQ, stating that this was a decision to help grow the franchise, which will certainly continue for future volumes.
