For this service, pictures are not saved without user permission. For storage costs and user privacy, we only retain images for as long as necessary to run our machine learning models, and do not store photos beyond this.

I know I could have used GIMP (I have never used it and I have heard that GIMP requires a lot training since the user interface is quite different from Photoshop) or PSE to improve the photo but I was interested in seeing what Darktable can do. And that is actually quite amazing. Masking is a strong feature!
I have been handed a couple of pictures by a relation and asked if i could help ( its the last 2 pictures he owns of his mum that passed away )because i'm good on computers LOL. I am in other subjects but only dabbled in very basic photoshop stuff. The issue with these pictures is that they have been left in a frame and a rectangular part of both have suffered from sunlight. I have tried adjusting curves etc but to be honest i dont know what i'm doing. Below is a cropped part of image any advice on how i can fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help.
Do you know why the pictures are coming out like that? Could that be a problem with the camera itself? or what is developed badly? If so could i get it re-developed? And how can i edit it on photoshop to make it look "normal"
I have no idea why your photos turned out this way. I've never used a disposable camera and than 30 years since I had a film developed.. I 've done some 'photo restores' though most of these were due to physical damaging or aging. So i took a look at the photo to see whether it could be digitally restored.
I tried out different things (different image modes/channels, applying an FFT filter and Topaz and Nik Noise filters but nothing really improved the quality of the photo. Yes, some marginal improvements are possible:
Because the quality of the image is low and the improvements are marginal, I question whether the effort would be worthwhile. I freely admit that I'm no restoration/PS expert. You might want to post your photos at Photograph Restoration. Restorations are free and the members often have much more knowledge and experience than I have.
There comes a point, after seeing dozens of such posts from wannabe film users, that you think - "Why are they bothering to use film after getting such crappy results?" - and if they want to challenge themselves as photographers; why not concentrate on the stuff that's important? Such as composition, lighting, interaction with the subject, etc.
@glen_h : I don't have a clue what a FFT a filter actually does or what kind I have. I've never bothered to look it up. I once downloaded some free FFT/IFFT plugins for Photoshop and I just 'follow the recipe'. I've tried them out - with mixed success - in reducing 'paper texture' or newspaper grain in scanned photos. You're right that the FFT/IFFT only really work on well-defined patterns (specific signal). Not with the variable 'noise' patterns like in this photo.
Sometimes formerly vibrant photos have lost a little bit of their luster, color, and character due to age and exposure to the elements. Fortunately, Photoshop has several tools for bringing them back to life.
In many cases, the Neural Filter will do an excellent job of colorizing your photo all on its own. But if you want to take your colorization techniques to the next level, you can use the Color Balance tool to adjust the tones in your image. You can make a Curves adjustment layer to control contrast. Or you can let Photoshop do the work for you. To do this, create a Curves adjustment layer, select Auto Color Correction Options, and click Bind Dark & Light Colors. Make sure to select Snap Neutral Midtones, then click OK.
As digital photography becomes more and more popular, many people turn their old paper photos to digital form tostore and view them on modern computers. Nevertheless, old photos are not always in the perfect condition: tears, spots and cracks remain even on electronic pictures.
This image is damaged by old age and sunlight - and I can't seem to make it look natural. The older woman is the matriarch of a family, and it is important to me to get it right. I can't seem to get detail into the faces and correct the color without it looking too dark for the daughter. Any help will be most appreciated.
Environmental factors can also wreak havoc on old photographs. Water damage, mold, and fading are all common issues that can degrade the quality of your precious images. In-store photo restoration services, such as Walgreens photo restoration or services offered by your local branch, often provide solutions to address these problems. A diverse team of photo editors and historical advisors will work together to restore your old photos to their original state, ensuring outstanding results.
As more people digitize their old photos, digital damage becomes an increasing concern. Pixelation and compression artifacts can reduce the clarity and detail of your images, making them appear low-quality. Online photo restoration services offer a convenient solution for addressing digital damage. Simply upload your old photo to their website, and a skilled photo restorer will use advanced photo editing techniques to repair damaged photo areas and improve the overall quality of the finished product.
One of the first steps in damaged photo restoration is addressing tears and creases that often occur in old photos. Photo restoration services, whether online or in-store, employ skilled photo editors who can carefully repair these imperfections. Old photos may also have missing parts due to damage, which can make the image appear incomplete. Photo restoration service providers use their expertise to reconstruct these missing areas, ensuring that your restored pictures accurately represent the original scene. This process can be time-consuming, as it requires a deep understanding of the subject matter, historical context, and artistic techniques. However, the outstanding results are well worth the effort.
