We are an interdisciplinary group with specialists in behavioral neurology, neuropsychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, neuropsychology, and social work. Our team is well-positioned to provide patients with the best possible care.
Focuses on diagnosis and treatment of patients with neurodegenerative diseases and neurobehavioral syndromes that impair cognition and function (e.g., Alzheimer disease, dementia, disorders of cognition, memory attention, and language). Integrates neurologic, medical, and neuropsychological information to formulate a comprehensive treatment plan.
Provides quantitative assessment of cognitive and psychological functions and compares patient performance against age-appropriate norms. The assessment aids in diagnostic accuracy and the development of treatment plans.

Neuropsychiatry, neuropsychology, and behavioral neurology share similar interests in brain-behavior disturbances. Recent advances in neuroscience have encouraged an increasing convergence of the three disciplines. These fields have differences in theoretical basis, professional and developmental background, most common brain-behavior focus, and principle clinical methods and therapies. This article compares neuropsychiatry, neuropsychology and behavioral neurology and suggests how improved interdisciplinary knowledge and interactions can lead to greater understanding of the neurobiologic basis of behavior.

The Division of Neuropsychology and Cognitive Neuroscience was founded in 1981 and has a three tier focus; clinical, education and research. Our faculty is dedicated to the evaluation and testing of patients with a wide variety of neurological, psychological, and medical disorders affecting cognition and emotion. The Division is also heavily engaged in research in collaboration with other members in the Department of Neurology. Finally, we are committed to training the next generation of leaders in the fields of neuropsychology, and cognitive neuroscience. Our program offers evidence-based hands on training in all testing and modalities used to diagnose and treat cognitive disorders.
Neuropsychology is the study of brain-behavior relationships. Neuropsychologists specialize in evaluating and documenting cognitive and behavioral changes related to medical illness, injury, neurologic conditions, and neuropsychiatric disorders. We offer comprehensive neuropsychological assessments to help with diagnosis, quantify cognitive and emotional status, and guide treatment planning. Our assessment services range from focused examinations to extensive full-day evaluations depending on the referral question. Our intervention services include cognitive rehabilitation and cognitive-behavioral therapy for psychogenic nonepileptic seizures for select cases.
The Division of Neuropsychology at UT Health San Antonio includes six neuropsychologists, five of whom are board certified in Clinical Neuropsychology through the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology. Our clinical neuropsychologists are skilled in complex differential diagnosis of neurocognitive disorders and how underlying neurological conditions affect daily life.
In addition to providing the highest standard of clinical care, the Division of Neuropsychology is committed to further research investigations into understanding and treating cognitive disorder. All patients have the opportunity to enroll in our clinical research activities, which including observational longitudinal studies, as well as disease-specific clinical trials.
What We Treat: A neuropsychology appointment is often requested to help with diagnosis, review cognitive abilities, and guide treatment plans. Our team of neuropsychologists specialize in evaluating and documenting cognitive and behavioral changes related to illness, injury, and neuropsychiatric disorder, including:

Research areas include structural and functional connectome studies of cognitive and seizure networks, functional change and reorganization after epilepsy surgery, and other projects related to epilepsy and dementia.
Functional Brain Mapping. Consistent with current standard of care practices, the Cognitive Neuroscience and Brain Mapping Lab routinely conducts functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for patients who are being considered for neurosurgical interventions to treat their intractable epilepsy. The resultant brain maps are used in surgical decision making so as to avoid disruption of functionally eloquent tissue and, thereby, reduce the risk of harm from brain surgery. For more information about this clinical program and related research using fMRI.
Cognitive Rehabilitation is used to improve and restore cognitive functioning after brain injury or surgery. We provide this service to selected patients, typically those receiving care for epilepsy.
