Delhi-based Minu Jain recalled a time when she jealously guarded every copy of the Femina magazine she owned. Flipping through the pages, finding recipes and saving them for a rainy day was part of her routine. She is not alone. Her mother, Kanak Jain, did the same.

There was a time during the 1980s and 90s when glossy, well-thumbed pages were strewn across every living room, and a monthly clean-up was needed, as the pile of magazines would sometimes grow taller than the toddler in the house.

Need to adaptWhile some magazines slowly vanished from the racks in the late 1990s and early 2000s, after facing stiff competition from digital platforms and content creators, many of these also re-invested themselves in new digital avatars.

All that has changed is the medium. As we spend hours scrolling through social media feeds, hungrily consuming content and reading what the algorithm feeds us, it is worth remembering where it all began.

The content offering will be a mix of fashion, beauty, health, parenting, career, sex, travel, self-help, celebrities, marriage, relationships, women issues and glamour. According to Lalit Pahwa, director, Pioneer Book Company, "There is a lot of scope in this genre in the Marathi language. Not many big brands are there in this segment. The magazine will try to become the closest confidante of the Marathi speaking women. Their thinking is different from North Indian women and we will take that into account in our new title."

Pahwa says that the new magazine will face competition from Griha Shobhika, the Marathi version of Grihsobha. "Griha Shobhkia is 100 per cent translation of the Hindi edition but ours will not be an exact copy of Meri Saheli. Only 20 per cent will be same in both the offerings. Moreover, there are other players in Maharashtra, such as Lokprabha and Chitralekha - but they are not women centric magazines."

Talking about the distribution strategy, he says that the group's distribution is already in place and it has about 500 agents across the country. This new title will be available across the newsstands in Maharashtra. "We will have 100 per cent coverage from Day One of its launch," concludes Pahwa.

The Meri Saheli innovation of a pre-recorded audio chip inserted into the centrefold of a magazine costs advertisers around Rs40 a magazine. This includes the cost of the device as well as four pages of ads on thick glossy art paper, says Pahwa of Pioneer. The Mumbai-based firm has been working on this concept since early 2007 and is willing to do this for other magazines as well.

Talking exclusively to Adgully, Lalit Pahwa, Director, Pioneer Book Company, said that this is the right time to launch a niche publication in Marathi language as the market looks very mature. Besides he said the only major competition in the Marathi language category is Griha Shobhika which is however just a translated copy of its Hindi version- Grihshobha. According to Pahwa, the other two magazines Lokprabha and Chitralekh, in the Marathi language category are socio-political magazines; hence there are no Marathi women's magazines as such.

The magazine is being promoted through the print and TV medium; the ads have been published in almost all dailies whereas Television Commercials have been telecast in leading Marathi channels. The decision was preceded by a research to find out what kind of content is the need in this market. The company has also bought a 10 day spot in the Lal Bagcha Raja premises, thus ensuring more visibility.
