I still have winzip 18 and refuse to upgrade any further since I have seen nothing in the upgrades to produce more security. I thought about 7-zip but there were a lot of cautions on the info page so I decided to stick with winzip.
My need is to zip and unzip files and folders and sometimes create a password protected zip file and if 7-Zip can do everything that WinZip can do in that regard then I may either keep my copy of WinZip 19 or switch to 7-Zip if someone can give me a reason to do so. Since there is a 7-Zip beta though, I would like to know more about that if someone has any details. Thanks.
Windows does almost all the Zipping I need.
If I need to create a zip with a password I use 7-Zip.
7-Zip also creates a self extractor if you use the 7z format and it can open lots of other archive types, even ISO.
Where 7-Zip falls down is use, it is not intuitive for me and I usually have to think carefully about what I want to do.
Anyone had experience of the Winzip Driver Updater? I just noticed it on a PC in my home which is used by everyone, not sure how it got there or if it is malign nagware, sales scam or a nasty malware? No-one will admit to dowloading it...they fear the wrath of Daddy, who is the mug that cleans up the messes.
Driver updater programs (eg. WinZip driver updater) finds lots of outdated drivers while in the scan only mode. Then, when you purchase the program, the new drivers are "found" immediately, and no new drivers are needed again for a long time. Or worse, when the program is purchased, all drivers are miraculously up to date. I come to this conclusion because when running WinZip driver free scan version updater, it sometimes finds no drivers out of date, and sometimes finds 22 drivers out of date. It makes me suspicous. When I contacted their tech support, the only answer I got was to buy the program!!?
My personal experience is to stay away from driver updating software. The problem with these are that they often provide inaccurate information on your drivers and could potentially cause serious issues with your pc if you install an incorrect driver. The best place to get updated drivers is from your manufacture.
WinZip Driver updater is a great application. BUT don't buy the paid version. The paid version will only install on one computer. (The EULA led me to believe I could install it on all my household computers). The free version will tell you enough to enable you to find and install updated drivers yourself.
We used to use WinZip and bought one for each PC up to v9, after which the massive cost decided us to go for 7zip instead. I pushed this out and did my best to remove Winzip from the PCs (this predates KACE so wasn't all too successful, it left the Add Remove entry)
I'm trying to create a Software item to filter for PCs that actually have Winzip. So far so good as I am checking for programfiles\winzip\winzip32.exe but is there something I can check to see if the installed copy is the registered or eval version?
Customers who purchase a multi-user license will receive a unique WinZip.wzmul registration file which must be copied to a WinZip subfolder in the Windows Common AppData folder. This folder contains application data for all users. For Windows 7 and Windows Vista, a typical path for the WinZip.wzmul file is C:\ProgramData\WinZip. For Windows XP a typical path is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\WinZip. The presence of WinZip.wzmul in this folder will convert WinZip to a licensed, registered version.
Anytime I download a .zip file or create a compressed folder, my PC makes it a Winzip file, which is no good because I don't want to pay their fee to get the full version (the version I have was a trial one I obtained when I had this one .zip file that needed it to work).
Uninstall WinZip by going into "Programs and Features" (Vista / Windows 7) or "Add/Remove Programs" (XP). Unintalling WinZip should cause Windows to revert to it's native ZIP handling behavior. If the Windows ZIP handler doesn't meet your requirements, you can always install something else.
If you need WinZip for some specialist features, but want to use the inbuilt facilities in most case, just (for w8):- go to Control Panel- choose Programs- choose 'Make file types always open in a specific program'- scroll down for ".zip"- select 'change program' in the top right- choose 'windows explorer'
Windows 10: remove all winzip or any other zip programs through control panel, programs, etc.right-click on start button, settings, apps, default apps, choose default apps by file type, scroll down to .zip file type, click on it then click on "windows" as thw default app for opening .zip files
Is this me or everybody is puzzled what is up with downloading 1 photo from Icloud photo, not only the download arrives in form of a .zip file, but also if you happen not to have the winzip trial you have to purchase the **** thing? So bothersome...
If you had it installed for some reason, then it would have associated the zip file type to itself which would make it open with the Winzip application and as such may require you to reset the evaluation version. However, Windows 10 has no issues with opening ZIP files on its own you do not need Winzip at all.
Thanks Phil, but I am running WIn 10, and had to uninstall and reinstall for Winzip to allow me to use "WINZIP Evaluation version", otherwise it requests to take action via "buy" button. Not sure if I am missing the point.

I had some problems installing the Oculus Desktop Application around two weeks ago. I tried for days and even with help from the Meta Store Support I couldn't get it to work. The download was easy and simple. Just a few clicks and I had the setup ready to get started. But at some point in the installation process, My PC shut down. I came back to see a black screen so I restarted the PC and began installing the application again, but when the installation finished, it said "something went wrong, please restart computer and try again" so I did, but it didn't help. I kept trying different methods for days and the support team couldn't figure it out either. There was so many different ways to try so I started trying everything. All the way from going inte BIOS and changing security settings, to downgrading to windows 10 and factory resetting the whole C:/ Drive. Yet.. still nothing. I then got to know that I don't need the Oculus quest to play PCVR so I stopped trying.
My suggestion is to allow users to download a "preinstalled" WinZip file. To be able to extract a folder and place a few files in their correct spot manually with the help of a manual note. As a last resort if the normal setup doesn't work like it did to me.
