There are E Ink tablets, smart pens, and notebooks made to save digital files of your handwritten notes or drawings. You can save files as PDFs, images, and Word Docs, or transcribe them to a text file in Google Docs to make all your notes searchable. Some of these devices can record too, which is great for lectures and interviews. If your notes need an upgrade, we recommend giving these a try. Be sure to check out our Best Dorm Essentials guide, as well as our Best Tablets, Best Laptop Backpacks, and Best Totes guides.
Skip the tablet and write directly on paper with a smart pen instead. The Neo Smartpen M1+ is the thinnest and lightest of all the pens I tried, which makes it feel a bit more like your standard pen. Importantly, it's comfortable to hold and use. You should be able to find whatever size and style of notebook you need as well as planners.

Moleskine has garnered a devoted following for its classic notebooks and journals, but it has also moved into smart territory. The Smart Writing Set gets you a notebook and pen bundle, so this is the best option for most people starting out. Write in the notebook and it'll appear in the companion app! But you can buy the pen on its own, as well as the smart notebooks and planners in various sizes.
This AI note taker has Whisper AI voice note transcriptions built in, as well as a GPT-4 assistant that helps you transform your notes. There is also a ChatGPT plugin that allows you to save information directly from ChatGPT. You can combine Reflect with apps like Zillow, Kayak, and Zapier to set up recurring workflows with AI that appear right in your notes.
Fireflies.ai is an AI meeting assistant and transcription service that transcribes voice conversations in real-time or from uploaded audio or video files, supports more than 40 languages, and can handle different accents, dialects, and terminologies. This AI note-taker can also detect and label different speakers automatically or manually.
Notion is one of the most flexible and powerful apps I've ever used. It can be a note-taking app, but there's also a database feature with multiple views (including Trello-style kanban boards and calendars) the ability to make anything into a template, and great collaboration features. At CIG, we use it for all of our team documentation, and I also manage every YouTube video I make with it.
Dex positions itself as more than just a note-taker. Its core capability lies in relationship management, combining the features of a CRM with that of a note-taking tool. For individuals juggling numerous professional relationships, Dex offers reminders about following up, history logs of previous interactions, and even prompts for sending out personalized messages. Its integration capabilities are fairly robust, enabling users to sync their email, calendar, and even social media to get a holistic view of their contacts. However, the platform's note-taking capabilities, while functional, might not be as extensive as those dedicated solely to this purpose. Additionally, first-time users could feel a bit overwhelmed with its multitude of features and may need some time to navigate the platform efficiently.
Niklas Luhmann is the brain behind the system. The german sociologist is the founder of the smart note-taking and knowledge management system, the Zettelkasten method. He was extremely productive in his career, writing 70 books and more than 400 scholarly articles!
A notetaker may be one of your requests. Historically, many students have experienced difficulty and/or delays in acquiring a human notetaker for one or more classes. Some of these human concerns include:
Many universities around the country are reporting similar issues. Universities such as Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia Tech and Georgia State, amongst many others, are working out alternative plans to the fallible human note taker. The results are much more effective and efficient for lecture-capture. Depending on the rationale behind your request for a notetaker, please review the following options and let us know, as soon as possible, what will work best for you for your future lecture-capture needs.
On the other side of the note-taking coin is the challenge of searching through your team's notes and documentation. Without structure, knowledge-sharing is rarely helpful. We lose context quickly as humans, and it can be hard to follow your original train of thought or understand the exact words or phrases you were using.
Some students with a note-taking accommodation may prefer to take their own notes with a pen that records as they write. The LiveScribe smart pen works with a special notebook that syncs the class recording with whatever was written, such that the students using it can tap on any part of their notes and hear a play-back of what was recorded at the time.
Students with this accommodation who have not purchased their own pen will be permitted to borrow a LiveScribe smart pen from ADS and will be provided with LiveScribe notebooks and ink at no charge. Each student must return the pen at the conclusion of every semester so that required maintenance on the pen can be performed. Failure to return the pen will result in a hold on student transcripts until the pen is either returned to the library or paid for by the student.
If a student chooses to use a smart pen to implement a note-taking accommodation, professors must allow the recording of their classes whenever note-taking is permitted by the rest of the class. No consent is needed from other students. However, to ensure compliance with PA Wiretap Law, professors must notify all students that the class may be recorded for accommodation purposes. This can be accomplished through a simple sentence, which professors can include in the syllabus, in an email message to the class, or as an announcement (with no fanfare): "This class may be recorded for accommodation purposes."
Access to class notes is critical to learning. There are three ways to accomplish this: 1) audio-recording lectures using a smart pen or other device such as an iPad, tablet or computer; 2) receiving lecture slides in advance of class, either through UNM Canvas or directly from the instructor; and 3) in certain limited situations, supplemental notes provided by a notetaking company.
Students may use a personal digital recorder, note taking app, or smart pen to audio-record lectures. Digital recorders and smart pens are available through Accessibility Resource Center as needed. Students sign our Recording Lectures Agreement when this accommodation is put in place for them.
The smart pen audio-records the whole lecture, and every time the student writes a note on the special paper that goes with the pen, the pen creates a kind of bookmark in the audio recording. This way, when the student reviews their notes later, they can use the pen to click on a note that they wrote, and the pen will take them right to that point in the audio recording, so that the student can hear exactly what the instructor said when they were writing that note. This way, the student can fill in what they missed, so that their notes are complete. If the student owns a tablet such as an iPad, there are excellent apps available that will do exactly the same thing that the smart pen does.
While having a dedicated note-taker can help team members focus on the meeting at hand, collaborative note-taking can be a great way to keep meeting participants engaged. Create a shared document or canvas where teams can add sticky notes and important points about the meeting that can be referenced at any time after the meeting.
The ARC recommends the following guidelines for the implementation of the academic accommodation of a volunteer note taker. This accommodation is approved for students with disabilities who have a documented condition/s, and who are unable to take notes by traditional means.
Past note takers have reported that they had their best semesters when serving as a class note taker, as they made sure to take good notes and then looked them over for clarity before sharing (which served to reinforce all the information presented). This could be you!
As a thank you for your efforts, note takers will receive certification of their volunteer service hours to support students with disabilities. Furthermore, being a note taker would be a great addition to any resume.
The real difference between meeting minutes and meeting notes is how we use them. Meeting minutes typically connotate a more formal report of the meeting whereas meeting notes tend to refer to shorthand, less formal documentation.

Despite the convenience of smart-planning with technology, sometimes you just have to write down your to-do lists, class notes, and random reminders in an old-school notebook. As a hybrid option, a smart notebook offers the nostalgic pen-to-paper feeling while integrating cloud storage for note accessibility for those moments when you don't want the physical presence of pad and paper.
To help you decide which smart notebooks are worth the investment, ZDNET tested and researched the best on the market, keeping in mind notebook feel, storage capabilities and options, special features, and price.
The Kindle Scribe is perhaps the perfect example of a smart notebook that doubles as a tablet of sorts. It has the same functions you've come to know and love in a Kindle, like 300ppi glare-free screen, weeks of battery life, and adjustable warm light. It's also compatible with Amazon's Basic or Premium Pen, so you can take handwritten notes or underline important quotations within the book you're reading.
